Hannett has been appointed counsel for a subcommittee of the Senate Interior Committee investigating alleged grabbing of public domain land by oil companies. Subcommittee chairman, Sen. Clinton Anderson (D., NM) said that hearings are scheduled to open early this fall in Albuquerque. The investigation was ordered as a result of reports that a number of oil firms during the past decade have violated both federal criminal and civil statutes in accumlating excess acres of oil and gas leases. Since its first shipment to the Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri, on August 2, 1946, the Laboratory has experienced phenomenal growth. Over 1100 radioisotope shipments are now made each month to 2700 users throughout the United States and 57 foreign countries. New 'Rare Earths' May Make Mining Business Boom Americans and oil industry exploration experts are looking today at a booming new business which promises to become a major factor in the growth of industry and medical research the search for rare earths. The rare earths carry tonguetwisting names .such as Europium, lutercium, holmium, terbium, erbium and thulium. Uranium, which came to fame during World War II as a prime ingredient in the atomic bomb, is one of the rare earths. Now its peacetime uses have outstripped the wartime tasks assigned to it. Less well known is European, which also played a role in World War II. This earth was used in England in a device which could see through clouds and fog, and proved invaluable in the detection of enemy aircraft during the siege of London. The lesser known earths are more valuable than either gold or diamonds, and these high values are based upon actual demand in the open market rather than the controlled markets for gold and diamonds. Increasing demands for research in industry, medical science and color television are tending to push the prices even higher. A typical example of firms which are taking an interest in Standolind, however, dismissed the search for these rare earths the suit shortly before it was is the Natural Power Corp. of scheduled for trial despite near- America with its extensive holdly two years of legal maneuver-ing- s ings in the Colorado plateau, which presently produces 80 per by both sides. number of individuals in a federal court action who charged Standolind Oil & Gas Co. with employing such practices. The federal suit originally was brought by Standolind against a group of former employees who allegedly use confidential information to secure valuable oil and gas leases in their own names. The employes in turn charged that Standolind had secured acreage in the names of relatives in order to increase the firms holdings. The defendants contended that Standolind was barred from possible recovery in the suit because it had accumulated in 1950 more acres of oil and gas leases than it was entitled to by law. Many firms in the oil industry are also taking an interest in the search for rare earths and are combining oil discovery and research techniques to this unique new field. It is the difficulty in; separating them from other metals which make them rare. In the past, it often took more than 1,500 proceses to separate a single metal. Such processes were costly and account for the which these high premiums metals bring Research firms, however, are quickly finding new processes for finding and separating them. As an example, one firm recently reported that it had developed a process which cut separation procedures from the usual 1,500 operations down to five operations. Further cuts in operation costs eventually will mean lower prices for the metals, but they also mean greater profits for those who own shares in the mining firms, and the industries the metals. demand-mandin- Free on request.
