Thats the conclusion of Bureau of Mines petroleum engineers who have found that octane ratings of automotive gasolines, both premium and regular grades, have soared to new highs in the United States. Their latest detailed survey, conducted in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute and just released as a formal report by Secretary of the Interior Fred A. Seaton, covers analyses of nearly 5,000 samples of gasoline collected from service stations throughout the nation during the winter season of 1955-5Octane since that ratings period are said to have gone even higher. During the reporting period, according to findings in company laboratories which were dispatched to O. C. Blade, Bureau petroleum chemist at Bartlesville, Okla., automobiles using premium grade gasolines hummed 6. along on gasoline with average octane ratings of 95.6, a jump of 5 points since the summer of 1952. Users of regular-grad-e gasolines bought fuel averaging 88.1 octane during the past winter, a jump of 4.5 points since 1952.
