Ulak foge 2 WESTERN MINERAL EDITORIAL SURVEY The Necessary Link LORRAINR faThe domestic mining centers need produdng-processin- g cilities to complete the full uranium processing cycle. To date Utah, largest producer of uranium, and center of the expanding domestic mining area, is restricted by the lack of processing plants. Press reports of the last few weeks indicate that the Atomic Energy Commission is considering Utah as the location of a reactor feed materials plant, proposed for construction by private enterprise. This is what the western states need. Utah is a logical place for it. Senator Arthur V. Watkins (R., Utah) went to bat for the project this week in a letter to Lewis L. Strauss, chairman of the AEC. Utah and its neighbors have long suffered. Senator Watkins said, from their standpoint as producer of many vital raw materials, with the processing and manufacturing being located elsewhere, in some cases, clear across the nation from the materials source. even The construction of a reactor feed materials plant has advantageous aspects for die government, the conone trolling factor, from a defense standpoint; the state from an economic standpoint. Location of the proposed plant in Utah, the Senator said, would have the defense advantage of concentrating at least one unit of a vital defense product in a producing area where the bombing of railroad lines and navigation works would not stop reactor output in time of war. Utah, as the largest producer of uranium to date, occupies the center oj the expanding domestic mining area in die western states. Utah is also convenient to the Arco installation which can provide technical supervision required by the AEC. As pointed out by Senator Watkins, Utah is also a good location from the standpoint that the recent passage of the Colo- rado River Storage Bill will provide power for such a project a considerable economic factor. The western states are now providing die bulk of the vital at present material, doing the groundwork, die mining and far-othe uranium As too the shipping processing plants. center of the nation, the west should see die end results by having a complete production, processing and manufacturing cycle. Location of the plant in the west would bring added revenue to the states by bringing new industry into the area. It would would also boost the advantages of the individual producers by bringing them in close contact with the finished product. The west will be watching closely the decision of the AEC in this matter. Through the efforts of such people as Senator Watkins, the western uranium cycle should be completed. ff Interested In Uranium Activities ? t? . . . Share For Share Three Oil Firms OK Merger The stockholders of Coloriver Oil Company and the Western Crude Oil Company voted unanimously this week to approve a merger of the two Utah companies with Midwestern Oil and Gas Corp. ' According to Alan H. Bishop, former secretary of the two dissolving companies, the new stock distribution will be on a proportionate share for share basis. Bishop, who will be the processing agent in Salt Lake City for Midwestern, gave several reasons , for the merger. All three of the companies, said Bishop, hold oil leases adjacent to each other in most of their Utah and Colorado properties. Both Coloriver and Western Crude have held their scattered properties for some time without doing any development on a large scale. by the stockholders, according to Bishop, that the combined operational ability of three companies culd better develop the possibilities of the oil claims, rather than allow the oil leases to merely drain the capital of the two smaller companies. The former secretary of the dissolute companies further stated that all of the resources of both Coloriver and Western Crude will be used for drilling and development on Big Flat and other properties in Uintah, San Juan and was It felt Grand counties, Utah. According to Bishop, among other assets which will be credited to Midwestern are a $300,000 tax credit and a one half of one percent overriding interest in one of Utah Oils producing wells in the Ashley field.
