Survey, Salt Lake City, Utah Research Opens On Zirconium Production For atomic-energpurposes, zirconium must be free of half, nlum, a metallic element that usually is closely associated with zircon and baddeleyite. Seeking a means of producing halfnium. free zirconium, the Bureau developed a method by which halfnium also can be obtained as a ductile metal, and for the first time made it available in amounts large enough for experimental applications. Later, it was discovered that halfnium also is a useful metal in the atomic-energfield. The Bureau now produces over 6,000 pounds a year of this metal in conjunction with its zirconium operations. Bureau metallurgists also have developed a consumable-electrod- e y (Continued from Page 1) lead, and zinc, and its commercial source mineral, zircon, is found in relative abundance throughout the world. Deposits of riiynn, which is recovered from beach sands, are known to exist in the United States, Australia, Brazil, India, Egypt, French West Africa; in fact, at almost any place where there are extensive beaches or alluvial deposits. Zirson reserves in Florida, California, Idaho and Oregan alone are estimated at 15 million tons, and mine production capacity is considered adequate for any forseeable demand. Baddeleyite, another sirconium mineral found in lode and placer deposits, is less plentiful, but Brazil now the only commercial source has reserves estimated at two million tons. Before the Bureau began development of the Knoll process, zirconium was produced commercially in the United tSates only by an expensive iodide process and sold for over $70 a pound. Continuous development and improvement of the Kroll method by the Bureau has made it possible to make zirconium sponge that sells for about $10 a pound. y process arc-melti- ng which industry is using to melt the zirconium sponge produced at Albany into ingots for defense. s zirAt present, conium is hot inshort supply it has been available for industrial use from a leading producer for the past two years but its high cost prohibits widespread commercial use.
