Garcia, State Inspector of Mines, said there are approximately 10 more producers, which have stopped actual production this month to core drill. Garcia said 12 of the 16 producers, which are hauling ore to New Mexicos only completed mill at Bluewater, are located in the Grants mining district. The other four are in the. Four Corners area. There are no producing mines in the southern part of the state, Barela continued. However, scattered throughout New Mexico are many uranium companies that are mining but not at- present shipping ore. Since the state has no jurisdiction over mines operated by Indians on Indian lands, no figures are available as to the number bf producing uranium mines on these lands. Of the uranium Over 95 mines in New Mexico are of the open pit type. However, in the near future more shafts will be required to recover ores being found deep underground.
