The claims, called the Crystal Cluster and Broken Halter groups, start at the head of the Black 8362-842- Salmon Area May Yield 12 Fluorspar m 8028-810- 9 gas-cu- Canyon. Mr. Smothers reported that of the lead vein high quality was 20 feet wide about fluorspar and approximately four miles in length, with three parallel leads running about three miles each in length. There are also numerous small leads, he said. The fluorspar is acid type, Mr. Smothers added, and of high quality, with surface indications showing extensive tonnage. Some of the fluorspar to market is trasporas 20 feet. The owners of the claims have done extensive exploration work and have located most of the principal veins, he said, and present indications are that the formations are of greater size and quality than the mines near Darby which recently sold fo about a million dollars. According to Mr. Smothers, the principal difficulty in getting the flourspar to market is transportation, as the only way the claims can now be reached is by pacjk trip down the Salmon iver. Mr. Smohers, who in the summer runs the Middle Fork with boatloads of fishermen and sightseers experienced little difficulty in traveling by boat to the deposits. At present, the fores service road, originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, extends for a few miles below the mouth of the Middle Fork of the Salmon river, still some 20 miles from the Crystal Cluster and Broken Halter fluorspar claims. 3X3B$3m)Q In peace or war it has never been too little, too late." The mine, located in Smokey Valley but across the line into Lander County, has a payroll of 14 under Supt. F. D. S chuck. Tungsten ore from this project is headed for treatment mill being built at a at Sunnyside. Soon to go into production is the White Caps antimony mine, owned by John Connolly. The papers granting a lease on this property are expected to be signed momentarily. Two or three other parties are T-Bo- ne n sampling and checking prospects in the. Smokey district, and undoubtedly further action will result if findings are favorable. Of course, the biggest single mining operation in the area remains the Round Mountain Gold Dredging Corp., managed by F. M. Jardine, where about 80 men are employed. Mtanwhile, the steel strike has hit the huge Basic Refractories operation it Gabbs, with 60 men reportedly bid off last week. The slant manufactures material for lining furnaces in steel plants, mostly for the western states. Plant Manager Norman Hanson stated that most steel companies have stockpiles of the material, made from magnesite ore, and will not order further supplies for the duration of the strike. The men bid off, about of the total crews, comprise the mining, milling and dead burning shifts as well as truck drivers and others. one-thir- Western Mineral Survey EAST FIRST SALT LAKE CITY UTAH 1, I 7-45- 54 d Deputy Mine Inspector Leonard Traynor said that although the Gabbs pit is down, the mill is continuing to opeate from the large stockpile on hand. In oilier local mining developments, Tonopah tungsten, near here, directed jointly by Red Hil1 Florence and Goldfield Development, is sinking a shaft, with Bill Frank of Tonopah in charge. This is a tungsten operation. Drifting and drilling continues at the nearby Summit King Mines, Ltd., which may develop into a major operation in the not too distant future.
