SILVER LEAD, :347 G UNO ( Approaching Objective Horizons Operations Record Loss Due to the fact that several structures; both those visible to the eye of the geologist and deep test wells now being drilled by major oil companies throughout various sections of Utah are approaching in depth the objective horizons that may put Utah in the column of oil producing states, the entire oil fraternity as well as the citizens of Utah are anxiously awaiting results. Interesting developm e n t s encountered in drilling during the past several weeks, such as the unconfirmed gas flow Carter Oil Company (subsidiary of Standard Oil of New Jersey) well approximately 11 miles west of Vernal, Utah, have attracted the attention of major oil companies interested in opening up new oil and gas fields in the Rocky Mountains and these companies are now preparing to join other oil companies now here, in searching for new those to be found with the seismograph and other geophysical instruments. Within the past month, the same Carter Oil Company now drilling near Vernal, Utah, has also acquired operating rights on approximately an additional 80,000 acres. One locale where they have centered their interest is the area just north of Fish Lake in Sanpete and Sever Countes. Another area where this same company has taken a large block is in the northern part of Summit County, Utah. They have not been alone in acquiring new holdings for it is reported that recently the Pure Oil Company, controlled by the Dawes interest of Illinois, headed by former vice president of the United States, Charles G. acquired operating Dawes, rights on approximately 60,000 acres on lands located along the southeastern border line of . e Utah. Records disclose in the Salt Lake District Land Office that during the past 14 days approximately 80 oil and gas applications have been made covering an area of over 200,000 acres; further, that on Monday, March 3, it is reported the Salt Lake Land Office had a red letter day in taking in nearly $100,000 on oil and gas applications and rentals. Most of the filings made have been by residents of Oklahoma, Illinois, California, Montana, Wyoming, Texas, and some by Utahns. The Standard Oil Company of California, also, has recently added; to their present-Utaholdings, two additional structures both located near Escalante in Wayne County. It is reported that they are unitizing these areas under the supervision of the U. S. Geological Survey and that drilling will commence during this year. Apparent improvement in the employment situation gives promise of a more nearly adequate, development program, James, Ivers, vice president and general manager of the company, said in his report of operations. The number of employes working remained at a very low level for the entire year, but began to improve slowly in November. The mine worked 280 days during the year, 'with an average of 230 shifts worked per operating day. Mearle G. Heitzman, manager of operations reported.
