Burton and Company, Feb. 11, 1943, 1G0 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. 0 Funds Lack Blocks Book The recently compiled directory of Montana oil and gas companies may end up in a waste basket unless about $750 of additional funds are made available to complete it, the Oil Conservation Board of Montana was informed at its January meeting. Dr. Francis A. Thomson, head of the bureau of mines and geology, and Carl J. Trauerman, former Minerals Survey director, appeared before the board to ask for funds to complete the directory In which there is now an . investment of about $10,000. The sudden termination of the WPA, which financed the project up to this point, leaves the publication and ready for multigraphing binding. The School of Mines and bureau of mines and geology will pay half of the remaining costs, Dr. Thomson, stated, but those agencies are unable to finance the entire amount. The directory was compiled under direction of E. Byers Emrick and is the most complete wok of its kind ever attempted in this state. H. E. There are two general processes milling and hydrometallur-g- y which can be used efficientores; the bureau ly on e lias determined. The ores in the United States contain 1 to 30 per cent manganese, and milling methods, which are rel-a atively inexpensive, 4S produce concentrate up to per cent manganese. Hydrometallurglcal the methods, which ' dissolve mainert from manganeses away terials for. eventual recovery by chemical or thermal methods, produce a concentrate of 60 to G5 per cent managanese. One of the newest processes developed in bureau laboratories is dithionate modification of a sulfur dioxide leaching method Is hydrometallurgy, which now in a In tested plant pilot being cooperation - with the American Smelting and Refining Company at the Latter--S Smelter at Garsul-fu- r field, Utah, utilizing waste smelter. the dioxide from Discovered and developed by bureau engineers between 1935 and 1938, the electrolytic process metallic high-purit-y extracts e ores from manganese through leaching and electrolysis. The process, patented and assigned to the United States Government through the secretary of the interior, is being used in a commercial plant at Knoxville, Tenn, as well as in the pilot plant at the Bureau Experiment Station .at Boulder City, Nev. By eliminating all the, nickel coins, formerly used in five-cethe adoption of the new alloy is releasing approximately 460 tons of the scarce metal and 250 to 350 tons of copper annually for the manufacture of war materials and essential civilian goods. .
