( Recent indications from Washington that production limitations may be eased on certain durable consumer goods are in line with observation of some steel industry leaders that steel production this year may be much larger, says Steel. Ingot production during the current quarter is estimated at an annual rate of about 89,000,-00- 0 tons, compared with about SG,000,000 tons last year. With additional capacity scheduled for completion this year some believe the output may reach tons. More conservative observers believe this estimate too high, on the ground that steelmaking equipment has been pushed so hard it will require much repair this year. Most opinion is that at least 4,000,000 tons additional will be available. Restrictions on building and some other outlets, including exports, may add a substantial tonnage to this, making considerable steel available for less essential requirements. Recent statements by military officers are to the effect that production is ahead of schedule in certain types of ordnance, guns, shells and tanks. It appears likely that any easing in non-wa- r restrictions will not come until last half and the belief is held it may .appear first in releases of frozen items now in control of the . Steelworks operations last week declined point to 99 per cent, mainly due to- - interruption by flood in' the Cincinnati district and closing of a mill in eastern Pennsylvania by labor trouble. The Cincinnati rate dropped 8 points to 80 per cent, eastern Pennsylvania was down 2 to 93 per cent and Clevelandpoints lost 3 points to 92 per cent. Chicago advanced point to 99 per cent, New England 3 points to 95, De- troit 2 points to 94 and St. Louis 2 points to 93. Pittsburgh held steady at 101 per cent. Wheeling at 88, Buffalo at 90, Birm-shipIngham at 100 and Youngstown at 98 per cent, While scrap supply supports steelmaking at the continuing high rate some uneasiness is pressed over the fact that mill reserves are less than what Is considered a safe margin and cur-o- f rent receipts in some areas are below consumption. Continued e from stocks is reducing the margin of safety. A factor in the situation is continued lack of manpower for yard preparation. Some observers fear a repetition of last summers shortage. In the Chicago district, according to War Production Board, only three of the 22 steelmaking plants' have 30 days simply in stock. Award of 22,500 tons of h pipe for a natural gas line from Maumee, 0., to a point near Cleveland, to carry natural gas originating in Texas, is the largest similar contract since the eastern portion of the 'TJig Inch oil line was let a few months ago. Blast furnaces in the United States and Canada consumed gross tons of Lake Superior iron ore in .February, compared with G.403.3G2 tons in Fel ruarv, 1912. For two months total consumption was 14,809,088 tons, against 13,561,785 tons in the corresponding period ifctst year. So large are they that over 6,000 rivets were used to secure 'reinforcing plates to them. Huge cranes will ride these girders, carrying tons of molten steel from the nine open-he?t'- h furnaces, each with a steel capacity of 225 tons daily. Shortage of materials has made necessary the use of great quantities of concrete in place of steel. Four hundred thousand cubic yards of concrete' have already been poured into the var ious structures. Before the proj- ect is completed, this figure wi 11 approximate 500,000 cubic yards. From one vantage point on the plant site can be seen elevated conveyor ways, coal and ore storage bins, and stacks, all made of concrete, although ordinarily of steel, thus resulting in a conservation of from 25 to 30 per cent of this vital material. Also winding around the site are miles and miles of railroad tracks, which will service the mill facilities. When completed, 65 miles of railroad tracks will have been laid within the plant site.
