Twt. e miles south of Oroville, in digging clay in November, 1928, two large and beaufor of the mammoth were discovered. tusks tifully preserved The tusks were embedded in a course sand and gravel deposit underlying the clays. Their bases were separate, show ing the tusks had been detached from the skull prior to burial. The skull or other parts of the skeleton have not yet been located. When uncovered, the tusks showed scarcely a trace of weather cracks and not much discoloration. Extreme length of the tusks is 12 feet 8 inches, circunf-ferenceight feet from the tip, 25 4 inches. Four feet from the tip, it is 21 inches. These dimensions compare with tusks found in Alaska. The largest actually measured, according to F. A. Lucas (American Museum of Natural History, Handbook aeries, No. 4), was 12 feet 10 inches long and weighed 190 pounds, while another measured 11 feet long and weighed 200 pounds. It is supposed that these tusks belonged to the species Elephag columbi which is the moBt common fossil elephant of western North America. However, if size alone be considered it may be suspected that the species is the great hairy mammoth Elephas primigeniug of the arctic tundras. Unless more of the skeleton is found it may not be possible to determine positively to which of these forms the giant tusks should be referred. The gravels in which the tusks were found have been classified as Pleistocene, from 25,000 to 50,000 years old. In Siberia, a number of carcasses of mammoths, wool, flesh and all were found frozen In ice or gravels. Portions of at least two of these animals have been preserved in museums. It is said that one of these bodies was in such good Bhape, that portions of its flesh were served at a banquet so that the scientists could have the novelty of eating meat refrigerated for thousands of years. No specimens as well preserved have been found in North America so that it is presumed that the species became extinct here before it did in Asia. g, e, 1-- A FAIRY TALE.
