During the week custom smel- ters reduced their selling price to 30 cents a pound, the same as the quotation for major domestic producers, according to E. & M. J. Metal and Mineral Markets. Later last week they shaved this further to 29 cents a pound for prompt delivery, and, with interest in forward copper at a low level, quoted 29 cents on metal for May shipment ' The custom smelters also dropped their bids on No. 1 scrap to 22 cents a price which would indicate they expect to be selling refined copper for around 26 cents a pound in three or four months when scrap purchased now goes on the market as metal. Meanwhile foreign copper was offered freely at lower prices, with fairly large tonnages available at prices ranging from 30c to 31tc a pound and the British are reported negotiating with Rhodesian producers for a new contract price, well below the cents N. Y. equivalent 33 Fabricators shipped products in March that contained 122,980 tons of copper. This compares with 123,850 tons shipped in February. Stocks in the hands of fabricators at the end of March, totaled 319,356 tons, against 312,177 tons a month previous. The administration is reported to favor deferring .action at this time. 1 CRISIS hospit- Many witnesses simply related to the committee the almost in- surmountable operating difficulties which they face at present metal prices, citing facts on s and production cuts, curtailments in exploration and development at their properties. The solution, they felt, could befet be determined by congress when it had all the facts at hand. lay-off- : , ZINC The continued weakness in London depressed all sections of th emarket for zinc, but, as in the previous week, smelters here took no action pricewise. That quotation was maintained at 1 cents for Prime Western, East St Louis, throughout the week. Demand was fair in Special High and rather slow in the othjer grades. TIN After steadying moderately early in the wek, the pressure on prices in London and Singapore continued. The weakness abroad resulted in offerings of prompt tin at 93 c, New York, a new low for the movement 'below the previous and weeks closing quotation. The buying .movement here was light. lfc .
