The big copper demand extended into the foreign market and substantial tonnages of Chilean metal was sold in this country at the equivalent of 36 cents a pound, delivered basis. Highlight of the week in the aluminum market was the application of Aluminum Company of America for a price ceiling boost of two cents a pound for pig aluminum, to cover higher production costs. GENERAL American Smelting & Refining Company has notified the Bolivian government that it intends to suspend' operations at its Corocoro mine because of labor disturbances. The mine has been producing 300 tons of copper in concentrates a month. RFC has approved a $94 million loan to San Manuel Copper Corp. The subsidiary of Magma will develop a mine in Final County, Ariz., to produce tons of ore a year. Full operation should yield 70,000 tons of copper and 3000 tons of molybdenum annually. Production is to begin in 1957. COPPER 24 c, Valley (foreign 34.533c refinery) Nervousness over the labor situation tends to distort the outlook. Negotiations at Kenne-cott- s Utah properties remain deadlocked. Because of this uncertainty, consumers have been purchasing copper freely, absorbing foreign as well as domestic metal. Sales in the domestic market of July shipment 0 copper now total more than tons. In the foreign division, Katanga moved up its base price from 32c to 33e. Sales of foreign copper by major producers operating in South America, Canada and Africa totaled 24,000 tons in the week that ended yes-terday. The E&MJ average price for the week was slightly higher than in the preceding week. Total imports of copper blister and refined) came to 36,449 tons in May, which compares with 38,218 tons in April.
