Witness the Navajos, the O sages, the Creeks, the Seminoles and other tribes which have been pushed back tQ what was believed worthless lands, which later proved to be most valuable, all taken from the redskins through conquest. And now comes the latest chapter in the history of American Indians. . The Ute Indians of New Mexico, Utah and Western Colorado may cash in on the atomic age. They may also get a slice of new-fouwealth in Colorados Rangely oil field. It comes about this way: In 1880 the Utes ceded 4,472,-50- 8 acres in Western Colorado to the government with the understanding the land would be sold and the money given to the Utes. The land wasnt sold and in 1938 Congress said it was absolute property of the government. The Utes brought suit and in 1943 a court of claims ruled they are entitled to recovery.' Appraisals now are under way to determine the value. Ernest L. Wilkinson, Ute attorney, said there is no estimate yet on the final value but that mineral deposits will play a part in the final reckoning. NEW YORK The ng 2000 500 at at little fel- is entering business' in large numbers and over three-fourt- hs of the wartime decline in the total number of firms has been recovered, the National Industrial Conference Board points out in its analysis of business integration and concentration which has just been released. It seems probable, according to the report, that the number of firms may exceed the prewar high by as many as from 300,-0- 00 to 500,000 concerns. The influx of new business firms, most of which undoubtedly will be little fellows, would do much to restore the prewar numerical relationships of large and small businesses. Before the war, small firms (those with fewer than 100 workers) accounted for 40 per cent of the labor force and 38 per cent of the total taxable wage. By the end of 1943, however, small firms accounted for only a third of all employees and a quarter of the total wage. low ALVIN KEDDINGTON, Clerk of the Third Judicial District Court of the State of Utah, in and for Salt Lake County.
