In the United States, where the delusion of inexhaustible oil resources lingers tenaciously, we have been able, so" far, to make only a gesture toward solving the liquid-fue- l problem that inwill be ours if additions evitably to our known reserves keep on diminishing at the present rate, to say nothing of the difficulties we may encounter if that pace becomes accelerated. Warning that Germans have been successful in concealing vital information on their techniques, Ickes declared that Americas experiments have been limited to the small-scalexperimental plant maintained by the Interior Departments Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh which has a capacity of 100 pounds of coal per 21 hours. nt on New & Used Electric Motors i Sdhuraga t o. Vitally needed tungsten is being sought near Ryder, also in southeastern Alaska, and exploratory projects have been carried on at Yayobi Island for nickel and on the Kenai Peninsula for chromite. For accurate analyses of - the various ore deposits' investigated by the exploration parties, the ore samples are sent to the bureaus laboratories at Rolla, Mo., and Reno, Nev. Many of the ore to samples begin their journey the United States by dog team or plane. The Bureau maintains a district office at Juneau. Alaska, to coordinate the work of the various field parties. In past 3rears. Alaska has been prominent in the mineral world because of its gold. However, since the war started, the territorys position has been altered because of its increased Importance as a source of antimony and platinum, both of which are essential in war production. Antimony is utilized in bearings, battery plates, cable coverings, and in primers for ammunition. Platinum is in great demand by producers of electrical equipment. Scattered throughout Alaskas 5SG.OOO square miles are many untapped and unexplored mineral deposits which contain virtually all the strategic, critical, and essential war metals, Secretary Ickes stated. "The territory- thus far has produced nearly a billion dollars in minerbeen als. most of which has gold There has been little effort to exploit other ores because of the limited knowledge regarding their extent and richness. Private enterprise cannot be expected to develop these areas until their value has been proved. The bureaus exploratory work In the territory already has-re- . "It would, beyond doubt, hasten the compulsory allocation and movement of managerial, engineering, and technical personnel. This, although it doo3 not appear in the bill. Is definitely in the minds of its sponsors. The magazine points out that there is apparently no blueprint for the sudden mass mobilization of management. The average management man, if he himself is satisfied that he is employed to his fullest skill ln a. war or essential job, can go tn sleep each night with full confidence that he will awake to find himself in the same job next morning. suited in the development of several ore beds, and reports of the mining engineers and metallurgists are transmitted regularly to various interested governmental agencies, including the. War Production Board, the Defense Plant Corporation, the Board of Economic Warfare, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, and the Army and Navy Munitions Board. In its Alaska program, the Bureau of Mines works closely with the Geological Survey, also of the Department of the Interior, which launched its studies of the mineral resources of Alaska in 1895.
