Handwritten messages in glass bottles are usually associated with shipwrecked sailors and desert islands. However, the messages and bottles in this story were not bobbing across the ocean waves, they were taken from the cornerstone of the Hunter ward, which celebrated its 100th birthday last week. The bottle in question was a two 'quart jar that had once held Kraft malted milk, and it was stuffed written material that jwith projected another life, another ! -- and ward, Ridd, Eugene contractor. Both of their widows, Lavina Nielson and Etta Ridd, were present for the cornerstone opening. Opening the bottle and removing the contents were Wendell Jorgensen and Matthew Petterson. The first document to be removed was an envelope put into the time capsule by Gus Larson, a bricklayer at the time the cornerstone was laid. It held a dated picture of the building under construction and included a list of the workman who had worked on the project. In addition Larson had included his testimony concerning the validity of the LDS Church, adding that he hoped that by the time the cornerstone was opened the people would have stopped smoking and drinking. Also included in the bottle was a list of those who had made contributions prior to March 1941, and a history .of Hunter ward that was four pages long. Pettersson noted that when the new cornerstone is laid the documents will be put into the new time capsule after they have been treated to preserve them. He also said that many other items have been selected to add to the old materials including a history of William Miller, the first bishop and his wife Lucinda Methena Wadsworth Miller. There will also be a list of songs sung at the cornerstone ceremony and a poem written by Rulon Rushton, as well as one written by Peggy Terry. In addition there will be a copy of the Hunter ward directory, a roster of the Hunter ward, a copy of a flyer advertising the family reunion of the John T. Evans family, a copy of the history of Hunter ward written by H.D. Nielson, and a copy of the history of the 35 wards that are now within the boundaries of what was once known as Hunter time. I The cornerstone was laid in ,1941 when the old building on the ! comer of 6000 W. 3500 South was '.completed. It replaced the pioneer jred brick building, that is still jremembered by longtime Hunter Residents. It sported two stained fglass windows in front with the names of Peter Larson and James Bertoch as donors, i The old church was built in 1941, constructed under the direction of Ernest E. Nielson, J then who was Hunter bishop of PAINTS LATEX SEMI GLOSS ward. Also included in the time capsule will be a Sunday school minute book from 1902 to 1904, a book that gives a list of Sunday school people in 1931-3a shiny 1888 silver dollar, the recently published Hunter Ward Cook Book and the Hunter Ward Centennial History Book compiled Matthew and " Bonnie by ' Pettersson. 7 .
