According to Jack DeMann, Hercules director of Public Affairs, the annexation request likely will be submitted to the West Valley City Council next week. The City Council is expected to forward the petition to the citys Planning Commission for consideration and approval. Then, the proposal would be returned to the council for public hearings and a vote. City Manager John Newman said that if the annexation received council approval and otherwise proceeds smoothly, only two to three months would be required to complete the process. A Public hearing on plans for development of the Market Street area is expected to be a key issue tonight (Thursday) at a meeiing of the West Valley City Council. City officials have received a pro- test from American Savings over plans by the city to declare the area blighted in order for it to be classified as a redevelopment area. Representatives of the city redevelopment agency will try to clarify the statutory defintion of blight versus the common perception that blight is another term for the plague. Some months ago we were notified that, because of environmental problems caused by the manufacturing process, most newsprint manufacturers would be discontinuing their production of green newsprint. We were aware that the time would come when we could no longer print a green front page and now that : time has come. This! last week) will be the last week that we will print the outside sheet of the newspaper on green newspring. A commemorative issue, if you will. We greet this change with mixed feelings. The green newsprint has been our symbol and a source of identity for many years and we are sorry to lose all that it gave us. We are sorry too for any sense of loss that our readers might feel. Our sense of loss is tempered by the excitement of many new challenges and opportunities particularly with color and graphics - that were not possible on the green paper. We look forward to presenting you with a fresh, interesting newspaper that serves you more local news than any other newspaper in the valley.
