Goff Green Sheet Theater Critic - SALT LAKE. Some very powerful forces gently collide in Summer and Smoke, one of Tennessee Williams most highly regarded works which is currently being produced on the stage of Theatre 138. The play, penned in 1948, follows the stormy relationship between Alma Winemiller, an idealistic Southern gir! (Jayne Luke) and John Buchanan, the boy next door who grows up to become a restless young doctor (Steven Larsen). While undoubtedly one of the topflight works of American literature, this poignant tale of unfulfilled love is vividly brought to life through the outstanding role renditions of both Luke and Larsen, the tight direction of Kathi Troy and the clever, innovative stage design of Michael Allman. hard-drinkin- Food Bargain Continued from first page, price was $45.74, compared with the lowest price of $39.97 in San Diego and the highest price of $59.64 for the identical foods in Honolulu. Jones turns in a very credible Dr. Buchanan, father of the restless protagonist; is Like most of Williams works Managerie, Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof -Summer and Smoke Can be characterized as the clash of oppose ing forces. The play paints a readily-believabl- of two long-tim- e friends who grow to love each other in diametrically opposite ways . . . portrait an opposition which inevitably builds insurmountable barriers between them. Although there are no nude scenes in the play and few obscenities pepper the script, it is nevertheless an adult drama as it deals with some very adult themes - love, lust, alcoholism, gambling, spirituality and materialism to name only a few. Most patrons will probably not enjoy this play - its more than a little depressing - but this solemn, manipulative, father Papa Gonzales. Others in the cast include Lori VanDreal, Barbara Titler, Ron Jewett, Kathleen Morris and Cuman near-underwor- David Cropper. s A production, Summer and Smoke continues each Thursday, Friday and Saturday through November 8 at Theatre 138, 138 So. 200 East.
