Coach Dale Pehrsons Murray football squad looks in prime shape for the 1986 gridiron campaign, so much so, they held a Saturday afternoon scrimmage to show off their wares. What the Spartans have to show off is a backfield of speedsters that will burn the corners and barrel their way through the middle. 180. He will be joined by backfield threat Littlefield. Ryan Thomas has earned a starting berth at the rover slot and is backed up by Stan Merican, safety; Bret Bringhurst, strong corner and Barry Brinton, weakside corner. Todd Stock rounds out the defense, earning a starting berth at nose- - guard. Were ready to get this season under way, Pehrson said. Were prepared, but have a tough starting assignment to start with. The Murray club begins the campaign at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) hosting the Warriors of Taylorsville. Pehrsons Spartans are even with the Taylorsville group during his two-yestand as head coach. The Warriors took last years bout, a hotly contested decision, but Mur-- 1 ray was able to win the previous year in a 15-- 3 exhibition. We cant afford any mistakes, said Pehrson, we have to capitalize on theirs. ar 14-- 7 KEARNS. We fell pretty good about how things are going, stated Kearns head football coach Tom Larson. Weve had good workouts and it looks like the kids we counted on are going to come through for Saturdays team scrimmage didnt belong to the offense alone. , The defense displayed front line strength. We seem to have a quality defense also, said Pehrson. They started the scrimmage in fine style. Although the defense received high marks for its action, offensive fury will come from a foursome of backers that will run the pigskin with authority. Pehrson tabbed senior Brent 165 pounds, as the starBailey, ing signal caller for the Spartans. Joining him in the backfield will be senior Cody Littlefield, 190, who is called the leader of the speedsters. The Spartan bakcfield has youth on its side with Tavake Fakafua, junior, 0 100, and sophomore Kevin 165, bolstering the Bolingbroke, backfield attack. Incoming offsenive plays will come from the receiving corps, led by Danny Devenport, senior, 180, and the primary target for Bailey. The senior combination is capable of an aerial assault that may stun opponents. Bailey threw for more than 1,800 yards last season. Sharing the pass catching duties with Devenport, Scott Kessler, 180 and senior tight end senior, Darren Mann, 180, will bring signals from the Spartan bench. In the offensive trenches, tackles Todd Wude and Darren Halford, 218, 210, respectiveseniors, ly, will key blocking assignments. 185, will be Ray Oorn. senior, placn: in a .. jard slot, as will Mark Packer, with Jerry Davidson at center. Kearns, which starts its 1986 e test season with a 5 p.m. at home against West Jordan today (Thursday), is no doubt hoping it can continue to build on the success it experienced last year. If thats to happen, returning players and new talent are going to have work together. So far as senior leadership is con205 cerned, fullback Kava Afu, a pound pile driver, will no doubt fill the bill. Afu, blessed with a good combination of speed, quickness and strength, is considered a major college prospect by Larsen and a main man on the Cougars offense. Other seniors that played a lot last year include defensive lineman 190; offensive Doug Anderson, lineman and linebacker Todd Bills, 205; offensive and defensive line wide 190; Troy Brakey, receiver John Brown, 130; offensive line John Emmell, 230; tight end, defensive line Mike Hagan, 175; offensive line Kelly Mounteer, 140; defensive back and running back Mike Holfeltz, 160; running pre-leagu- 6-- 5-- 5-- 4, 6-- 6-- 155; running back, Nieberger, linebacker Dan Spies, 185; and 130. wide receiver Junior Vigil , Senior quarterback (and outside linebacker) Reed Verslius, according to coach Larsen, is ready to step into the starting role at signal caller. Wanlass, Two areas of concern, according to Larson, are in the defensive secondary and at tailback. Kearns lost a couple of starting DBs to graduation, so there will be two new faces in that group. The key will be how the new people fit in. The tailback spot is still open at this juncture, as Larson and his staff look over some prospects. I do feel good about our lines, he quickly added, as weve good some good experience there. Depth, however, maybe a problem, so well have to watch the injury situation.
