Yes, seniors, only the equivalent of three short weeks before we all have to face the real world. Then again, Im sure most of us will have no trouble getting used to it, if you know what I mean. Seven students from Granite and Murray districts have been awarded National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. The announcement is the final of three denoting merit scholarship winners selected from among finalists. Murray high senior Kevin Cottam was awarded a scholarship to the University of Utah. He plans to study computer science and math. Last week he won a Green Sheet Performing Arts Award for best performance by a male lead in a nonmusical for the schools production of Look Homeward Angel. He is also president of the academic decathlon team and president of the German club and a member of forensics club and school choirs. He is an Eagle both by Brigham Young University. Miss Graham plans to study business. She has been in the honors program for three years and was a piano soloist for the schools Concerto night. She is in Latin club, Dance club and performed in the school musical. She has taken a lead role in the annual charituy dance benefit for four years and accompanies the schools vocal ensemble. Towers plans to study medicine. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a varsity trgfck athlete and corss country runner. An accomplished organist, she composes music and is learning guitar and is taking flying lessons. She is a first aid CPR expert and has written screenplays, short stories and poetry and does oil painting. She is a member of the German and Usher clubs at Granite. The Wells youth will study computer systems engineering and has already been designated a Presidential Scholar at the UofU. He is involved in the National Honor Society, is a varsity cheerleader and won the Hugh OBrien AAward. He is first chair trumpet in the Granite Youth Symphony and editor of the school newspaper. He is Computer club adviser and teaches a community education class in computers. Hes also involved in the school Ski club, Calculus club and Science Bowl team. Named from Granger high were Kevin J. Anderson and Bryan D. Hunt, both University of Utah. Anderson will study compter system analysis. Hes been a member of the National Honor Society for three years, took first place in the BYU Language Bowl, has been designated Most Likely To Succeed by his peers and has won a special award for outstanding performance in English. He is also a member of the school tennis team. Hunt will study math. An Eagle Scout, he has been designated an Academic is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish club. He participates in Junior Achievement and was a top 10 placer in the State Math Contest and a first place winner in the BYU Language Fair.
