Janson said city officials also are anxious to keep Hercules in place, but noted that solutions to the buffer zone dilemma are not easy to find. Available answers are generally quite expensive, he noted, citing suggestions the city develop a golf course around the plant. Janson praised the contributions of Planning Commission members who provided insight into the issues involved and helped with committee organization. Its a big commitment for anybody, even if they get paid for it. Members of Boy Scout Troop 229 will host a pancake feed from 7:30 a.m. to Janson said he was encouraged by turnouts. We seemed to get a lot of interested people willing to work and get others involved, he said. In one area Redwood) where the turnout was lighter than hoped, Janson noted that a subsequent meeting with community leaders generated more interest. Issues of concern varied from meeting to meeting, although several subjects did attract more widespread attention. Not unexpectedly, the question of how much multiple unit housing the city could support was a frequent source of discussion, particularly in areas (along 3100 South, in the southeast quadrant of the city) where high density housing is more prevalent, Janson noted. He said most residents seemed to accept the need for multiple units, but questioned the amount that should be built in the future. The status of Hercules as a major taxpayer and employer in the city also was a topic of considerable discussion at the meeting in District 6, which encompasses WEST VALLEY. Following two weeks of general meetings, the process of revising the city master plan entered its second stage here last night (Wednesday). For the next two months, committees formed in each of the six planning districts will meet to analyze problems and needs in their areas and to develop recommendations for handling those issues. The first committee meeting was held last night, noted city long range planner and master plan coordinator John Janson. During the general district meetings, the committees drawing the most public interest were parks and recreation, residential growth and neighborhood appearance, Janson said. Other committees are studying commercial and industrial growth, transportation and public facilities in each district. Less interest was expressed in an energy committee, prompting Janson to form only one citywide committee to address that issue.
