Show g County Tells Mayor WEST Thursday, Dec. VIEW valley 10, 1981 More Equitable Way To Fund Zoo Sought property taxes by up to one mill to SALT LAKE. A more equitable method of financing the operation of Hogle Zoo than what was approved at the polls in July is the goal of the County Commission. That was the indication given Both Murray and South Salt Lake, as well as Midvale, contended that the the majority of their voters opposed the proposal and therefore should not have to pay the tax. In addition, officials in those three cities felt they had not been given an accurate picture of what was to transpire if their governing bodies agreed to participate in the special election. Seven cities refused to participate West Valley City, West Jordan, South Jordan, Riverton, Draper, Sandy and Bluffdale - and therefore would not have been subjected to the tax. Commenting that he felt good about progress made during Tuesdays meeting was Mayor LaRell D. Muir of Murray, who had asked County Commission chairman Mike Stewart for an opportunity to here Tuesday during a meeting involving county officials and mayors of two cities (Murray and South Salt Lake) of the three which had asked the county to relieve them of the responsibility of sharing in the tax obligation. Those - Trustee Retains Seat on Board the tax, at this time, at least. Instead, he noted, the plan is to pursue action through the State Legislature that would broaden the source of property tax, making it statewide. One proposal would have the state levy less than a mill, while another would authorize individual counties to levy about a half mill. Should the matter not be resolved on the state level, the County Commission would then again be faced with whether or not to implement the special taxing district. Appointment of a board of trustees would be one of the first steps to take. Mayor Muir said he learned that while the County Attorneys office has not issued an official opinion, attorneys studying the matter feel it would be the prerogative of the special taxing districts board of trustees to allow Murray, South Salt Lake and Midvale to withdraw from the district. ticipating and part of it not, Muir said after the meeting.
