Show WEST VALLEY VIEW 5 . Thursday, Feb. 19, 1981 , Production At Kingsbury PMT In opportunity will get under way tonight (Thursday). Pioneer Memorial Theatre is producing, for the first time in the West, ethnic musical the Porgy and Bess. Executive Keith producer Engar com- mented, We feel this is a chance to see this great American work. The national touring company played here in 1945, but this is the first time it has ever been produced in the Intermountain West. Because of the enormity of it - the casting, orchestra and production problems - I doubt that it will be done once-in-a-lifeti- soon again. Because of the size of the orchestra (40 pieces) the production will be presented in Kingsbury Hall where there is a pit large enough to accommodate the musicians. The size and ethnic background of the cast, coupled with the com- - Week's Births plexities of the music, dictated that 19 singer-actor- s had to be imported from New York City and Los Angeles. They have joined with UofU students who are residents of Salt Lake and Ogden to form a cast Ella Gerber has come from New York to direct her 21st production of Porgy and Bess. She has done so for opera companies, community and university theaters in many states in this country, as well as in Europe, Israel, Canada, plus in Australia and New England with a Maori cast. Porgy will be played by Edward Pierson and Bruce A. Hubbard. The role of Bess is being shared by Vanessa Shaw and Barbara Purdy. All are from New York. Mr. Pierson and Mr. Hubbard both appeared at PMT in 1976, the former in Showboat and the latter in The Patriots. A second problem is that irresponsible groups often chop up tables within the pavilions for use as firewood, creating additional expense to the county. Swensen admitted that among the options being considered by the staff is to seal up the fireplaces. He said they are not being used a great deal by "responsible parties." However, the staff is concerned that Lions clubs will be offended by the decision and is exploring with those clubs superintendent, reported to the Recreation Board that resulting that the maintenance cost is a serious problem.
