Show And This How It All Began Is Bellos The The Recalled Of Fair By Early Days by LaRee to the Bellos, but the most successful one was at Murray in 1937 It was so successful in fact that Murray City officials donated three acres of land at Murray b il Park as a permanent j home for the feji 4( position and it has been held there ever since Back in the 1930s however the activity was the result of a lot of hard work done by , Pehrson Association with the 4 H clubs of America was the catalyst that launched Chester and Mae Bello into a long and deeply rewarding involvement with young people and earned for them the title of "Mr and Mrs Salt Lake County Fair They became active in 4 11 work in 1917, as a means of providing worthwhile activities for young- sters in the Magna t. area Chester taught v boys plant and animal skills, as well as crafts, while Mae concentrated on sewing, food preservation, and a lot of general homemaking techniques that stood many a young lady in good stead when she entered holy ex-fT- 1 volunteers preparations. The Bellos say that in the beginning the fair officials were not able to afford cash prizes for winners, just ribbons, but later there were cash prizes and one year Commissioner Morgan gave sewing machines to the winners in the girls style dress review Both of the Bellos have a long list of accomplishments indirectly connected to the fair, with Chester serving as assistant state director under from flour sacks, blouses from lace curtains, and childrens clothing from mens suits. There was no shame attached to it, she adds, because it was good, honest work that served the purpose. She laughingly notes that the old patch-worquilts which were so laboriously assembled from scraps are now sought after as pieces of American folk art. And both of the Bello's agree that the fair is something the county can well be proud of because it has been an uphill pull over the years. In fact they said that from time to time it has been suggested that the county doesnt need a fair anymore. k From left to right: Salt Lake County Commissioners of 1939-40- , (first name unknown) Morgan, Burt Reynolds and (name unknown) Page. O. E. Brothers, of the S.L. Fair Board, is on the right. by-la- wedlock The Fair began in 1932 as Salt Lake County Day, under the Farm Bureau and the state extension serno vice. It w'as a one-daaffair parade, no fanfare . . and was held in a different community each year, with the first being held on the old Monroe School grounds on the corner ... y without pay who got up at the crack of dawn to put together the preparations that had been a year in the making Mainly, according to Chester and Mae, it was a challenge to show the rest of the state what Salt Lake County could do. Chester was instrumental in drawfor ing up a constitution and the fair that were patterned after those used at Utah State Fair Then the group went to the Salt Lake County Commissioners and Murray City, as well as local businesses, seeking funds with which to operate the activity. Many merchants supported the event with not only money but merchandise as well. Later a special mill levy was set up to take care of the costs of the exposition It was years and years before anyone was paid, Mae says. But it eventually came to that, but there were a lot of people who helped who never did receive the recognition they should have had And so many, she wistfully adds, have passed away w'ho really worked hard to make the fair a success It wasnt all glory, Mae goes on It represented a hard work and sacrifice on the part of a lot of people I recall the Petersons from Draper Ray Kingston from Murray; E O Brothers, and Earl Howe who were the backbone of the fair for a good many years. Vera Martineau, Joe Parrish and Mel Burmngham from the extension service all had a hand in the . of 3500 South 4000 West It was something that folks in the rural areas looked forward to because if they were winners there they got to go to the state fair. There were displays of livestock and poultry, as well as crafts and clothing exhibits, but the highlight of the event was the horse pulling competition that drew some of the finest horse flesh from all over the valley However the day took on a tragic aspect that year when one of the horses owned by Ray Peterson broke a blood vessel and had to be put down Over the years Salt Lake County Day was held in Magna, Draper, West Jordan and Riverton, according West Valley City, UT. There is something to live for in this world besides having fun, they and it is wonderful to maintain, have something you can do with your own two hands. They also lauded the county commissioners over the years for their support of the fair, regardles of their West Valley View Pg.8B 21, 1980 Thursday, August political leaning, and pointed out that continuing the county fair tradition is one way of preserving the old time values that made this country great. Working with the extension service, Mae went into peoples homes and to school centers where she demonstrated how to preserve food through the use of a pressure cooker. In all she individually contacted more than 1,000 families. Mae tells that during the depression years people were forced to kill their cattle because there was no feed, and so they met in the various centers to can the meat. They also canned vegetables and fruits, and times got so tough that they even canned carp, which today is considered a trash fish.
