Field conditions and the late hour of the contest were the reasons given for the decision to suspend the game. According to both coaches, High Activities Association officials said that, because it was a state championship game, they wanted to give both teams a chance to play all seven innings if possible. However, they were, apparently, unable to find a dry field to play it on before the scheduled start of Thursdays round That led to the decision to call the game complete after five innings "I really think they made every effort to find a field," Hatch noted, "but just couldn't get one ready in time But I certainly understand how coach Unck (LaRon) and his players at Cyprus feel " "It really hurt our kids feelings, coach Unck stated later, "because w e left Derks Field Wednesday night thinking we still had a shot. Then, at 1:10 p m. Thursday, we got the call that the game had been called. Unck maintained that Derks was playable Wednesday after the rain delay, except for the pitchers mound and he felt that could've been fixed up and the game continued. Getting back to the action, Cyprus led off with three runs in the top half of the first only to watch Kearns pick up six runs in its half of teh inning Cyprus got to within'a run with two more in the second then both teams w ent into a three inning lull. The Pirates posted the tying run in the top of the sixth, but the Cougars got three in the bottom of the inning, Mike Peterson driving in two with a double. Then the rains came. For Cyprus, Preston Lohmeyer and Mike Nunley went 2x3 at the plate, Nunley batting in two runs. The Pirates had eight hits and Kearns seven. Coach Hatch made note of a number of players, not just for their efforts during the tournament, but for all season. John Brown had a , super tourney, playing solid defense and picking up 12 hits. Glen Dunyon and Todd Funderburk werent thrown many good pitches after the first day as teams respected their prowess with a bat. Brady Clark also played good defense, turning several double plays at second, Dusty Moody contributed at first and in right field and Lonnie Anderson pulled us through on the mound, according to Hatch. Of course, Hatch added.
