Only 6 Have Filed For Ten Positions 'Save Our Tax Base' Legitimate Battle Cry For Lake Valley; What's Left Of It, That Is, After Salt Lake City Gets Its Share i M M What may have been in the beginning a legitimate effort to preserve the future tax base in the unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County is turning into some kind of April Fool's joke. While the cry of the grassroots element in the incorporation movement has been "Halt annexation - preserve our tax base," others have been busy "reserving" territory for Salt Lake City and, on top of that, have laid plans for an additional program that would come after Lake Valley City is approved by voters on May . The property involved represents some of the most promising land of the next decade or two - lying directly west of the current corporate limits of Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City officials have made public their intention to "negotiate" with the new Lake Valley City government to "adjust" boundaries, enabling Salt Lake City to extend its boundaries westward all the way to the shores of the Great Salt Lake. An official spokesman of the Lake Valley movement has even indicated XX' give-awa- y 1 1 g She Stoops To Conquer that Salt Lake City would dated." be "accommo- Should that be the case, it would represent a marked contrast to the goal of tax base preservation, the foundation on which the grassroots movement was said to have been formed. It would seem that none of those serious about creating their own city would be very amenable to giving away portions of the tax base they are trying to preserve for their own use. That would seem even less likely if the bulk of the Lake Valley people were aware that a sizeable chunk has already been "given away" - and to the same recipient - Salt Lake City. Curiously enough, it has been dubbed by some of the valley's major media as land," leading one to assume the area has negligible value. Lying generally between 2100 South and North Temple, between 3600 and 7200 West, land" has long been targeted for westward expansion of Salt Lake City, to be developed industrially into a lucrative source of tax "no-man'- s "No-man'- s - Pvmlet U . . . with an pye for the little thing Comedy At Babcock SALT LAKE. All of this "ibby-dibs- " activity by Salt Lake City (both before and after the May gxj: 11 :pj: election) would seem to make the Lake Valley voter wonder just what motivation prompted the grass roots to set aside three major areas in which Salt Lake City can annex (and that is whether Lake Valley passes or not). While at the same time, passage of Lake Valley City would (with only minor exceptions) halt future growth of the valley's other 11 cities. In the early stages of forming the Lake Valley City proposal, one of the basic goals was to form a new city out of the remaining unincorporated areas of the county. That opportunity was apparent- ly there at one time. But with the Lake s Valley proposal having several exclus-ionof Salt of large tracts land, plus Lake City ready to negotiate away even more, the process of tax base erosion has already started before Lake Valley voters can go to the polls to consider voting "Yes" in the name of "halting annex- ation to preserve our tax base." map-maker- s pi; ip: gg jgg pi-lan- jpii pi; pi; p;j pi pi; pi pi; pi; pi; p Jp: Jail Is Inc. for Monroe Topic Of Involved with inner city and minority pastoral work for the past 18 years, she is well known as a public speaker and lecturer in the New York area. State law requires that 300 signatures be submitted on a petition naming an individual as a candidate. The signatures must be gained from the total area in a mayors case or from the district area in the case of a councilman. Mrs. Llewellyn said the filing deadline for candidates is April 12, a revision of what had previously been announced (April 19) by the county office.
