Show Beckstead's Roots - Year Old Magna Man Digs Out Many Family Histories Eighty-fiv- e Like Alex Haley, the celebrated author of Roots, Elmer Byram Beckstead of Magna has a deep sense of continuity that he has passed on to his numerous progeny, as well as en couraging others to research their beginnings and document their own lives He was born August 24th 1895 in South Jordan, a son of Henry B and Amanda Jane Egbert Beckstead, and he spent his early life on his fathers large farm In the meantime his future wife, Ida Goosman, was growing up in Hamburg, Germany coming to Utah when she was seven years old and by 1916 they were married and making a life of their own It was 1922 when the family moved to Magna, as a result of employment in the Utah Copper Concentrators, and Elmer remained with the firm until his retirement in 1963 after 41 years of service Deeply religious, he taught LDS Sunday School in South Jordan, in ad dition to serving seven years as secretary of Magna ward genealogi cal work, four years as secretary of the 192nd Quorum of Seventys, secretary and group leader of the High Priests, and a home teacher and ward clerk for eight and a half years But in spite of all his other activi ties he still had a strong yearning to collect the history of his progenitors and compile it into a book In 1953 he found others who shared his interest and he became a part of a group who gathered records of the Beckstead family from all parts of the United States and Canada Together they put the information in sequence, creating an informative volume that created interest not only here but abroad One of the books was taken to Ger many where The Beckstead family originated, and it was warmly received by the German branch of the family tree who promptly proceeded to have it translated into their native language At the end of World War II, Elmer took up photography as a hobby, partly for pleasure and partly to further enhance his genealogical re search He never had a professional lesson, he simply learned by doing, and much of his work is included in the Beckstead documentary Elmer is also a typist who does all of his own work As with his pictures, which have startling clarity, the copy he turns out is surprisingly putting together five generations pictures By 1974, he w as inspired to produce a set of records for each one of the married members of his family The set contained an average of 55 sheets of records as well as numerous pictures of several generations covering a period of 244 yeais When he was finished he had made 61 sets of the family histoiy jf a local Elmer Beckstead, master on records, is pictured with only a smattering of the dozens of histories, books and compilations of research into his, and his wife's histories. 85th Birthday Wheeler Farm will be the setting for the celebration of Margaret Jones Smith Dukes 85th birthday Saturday August 30 The event is being hosted by her family Margie was born Aug 25, 1895 in Bingham Canyon to Reese Jones and Margaret Jane Werrett Williams e he finished compiling the facts about the Becksteads, Elmer set out on a more ambitious project He gathered records on the Egbert and BybCe families," m addition to Jones Margies mother cooked and enter- tained for LDS missionaries and Margie and brother Sam, would give Bathtub Is Not Becoming To You, Then You Should BeComing To Us! bathroom cMagic POrCelaill COte Free Estimates Jl 3rour (Bid k fixtures Bathtubs, Sinks and Ceramic Wall Tile Professionally Resurfaced Perma Ceram.
