Studies have found that parentese is used by Russian, Japanese, Arabic, French and Spanish-speakin- g parents. We also find that children as young as three years old respond in parentese when they talk to a baby.' Austin cautions parents not to confuse parentese with baby talk." That is, it is unwise to speak to children using incorrect English. Calling a rabbit a wabbit" introduces the child to the wrong pronunciation of the letter r. Parentese employs very simple language with a lot of tone variation, but is generally grammatically correct, Austin says. oc- By Dennis Hinkamp CSV Informant) Services LOGAN Did you ever notice how a baby can turn a room full of sensible adults into what sounds like a group of cartoon characters? Just try talking to a baby in a normal tone of voice and see what happens. Ann Austin, an instructor of family and human development at Utah State University, says this change in voice is called parentese. More specifically, Austin says parentese is a change in the speaker's pitch and intonation. People usually address a baby in a pitch and also greatly exaggerate the ups and downs in their voice tones. higher-than-norm- al Cold Cold Judd's Lounge Nov Oran Arm Riuodiling Biik NIC! 882-082- on vl By TERRY BOGLCKI and JACKIE Fkikndlt 5 88917. 33808O. They g were busy starting a creation, which is now a worlds record the worlds longest hoagie sandwich, built by Kearns High. The boxes were soon emptied of their contents of two-fobuns, 573 singular buns in all. The halls were lined with paper almost every hall in the school. The buns were placed on this paper, then came 142 lbs. of mayonaise, 10 gallons of pickles, four gallons of mustard, 4,030 slices of bologna and an undetermined amount of lettuce. Then the masterpiece was complete! The effort was paid for by the day-lon- ot student body and teachers by way of sandwich ticket sales. Just after completion the students were given their proper purchase (in sandwich) and time to enjoy it. A lot of support was shown by everyone. Quinn Barton, Kearns High autobody teacher, bought 50 feet of the sandwich for S100. It was all in all a great cause, say student officers. It helped raise money for the hill project, it united the school, and it will be something students at Kearns High can talk about for years to come. sandwich was Fifty feet of paid-fo- r donated to the Boys Ranch, along with an extra bucket of pickles. Kearns now holds the Guinness Record of 1,146 feet, breaking the previous record of 1,051 feet.
