Cyprus grapplers wear down Davis, destroy Kearns By MIKE GYGI Tima CormpondfM MAGNA The Cyprus Pirates take their wrestling very seriously. They are with a win over Davis, and an impressive victory over Kearns, now 2-- 0 35-3- 1, 47-1- 9. The Pirates had all the talent in the world last year, but just could not put it all together due to some coaching and leadership problems. But all that has been taken care of and coach Steve Henefer feds that his team may just come out on top at the A tournament 4-- this year. The Pirate grapplers rely on their light weights to win the matches for them. They take a big early lead, and it is almost impossible for the other teams .to catch up. The lightweights getting the job done for Cyprus this year are Rickey Turner at 98 pounds, David Lucero, 105; Dave Vialpando, 112; Mark English, 119; Wayne King, 126; and Frank Lucero, 138. All these men pinned their opponents at Kearns, except Dave Lucero who won 21-- 5 which was good enough to get five Pirate wrestler goes for the pin against Kearns opponent. team points. The maximum and individual wrestler can get for his team is six, by either pin or forfeit. In the victory over Kearns, Cyprus won eight out of the 12 matches with seven pins. Lyle Silcox at 155 and Daryle Wright at 167 were the other winners for the Pirates. Both won by pins. Tony Nolen of Kearns, wrestling at 132, found hiimsdf on his back for almost the entire first round, but managed to come back and defeat Daren Woolsten holme by pinning him. Other victories for Kearns were turned in by Tim T will gear at 145, Simon Vigil, 185; and Farrell Price, heavy weight. The Pirates arent as strong in the up per weights as in the lightweights. This is due mainly to experience. Even though the experience is lacking, the heavier wrestlers are still winning key matches when they need to, and sometimes against much better opponents. The reason for this is training. n It is a fact that no other as hard as wrestling. The trains sport boys train every day for two grueling hours or so. More time is spent doing calisthenics and running than actual mat work. Many of the boys are on diets to make their weight each week for the specific weight class they wrestle in. Training took iu toll on the Davis Daru in their match with Cyprus. It was the first match of the year and some of the wrestlers were expected to tire out by the third round. But what was not expected was to see it all one sided. The Darts wrestled well, but in the matches that went the distance, the Pirates held on and wore their opponents down. Cyprus wrestlers won seven of their matches against Davis, and tied one. Daryle Wright, 167, laterally won the match for Cyprus. Wright was behind in his match and Cyprus was ahead 29-1-9 with two matches still to come. In the third round he reversed his man, and turned him over for the pin. Wright wasnt a better wrestler than his opponent, but he was in better shape and he had more guts. The next two matches were both pins for Davis. If Daryle hadnt won his match, Cyprus would have lost by at least six points. A tie would have given Davis the victory by two. The next match action the Pirates will see will be this Friday and Saturday at the Brighton Classic Tournament. The Pirates win undoubtably do weU, but be 7-- 4, looking for first place championships from David Lucero, Wayne King, David Vialpando and Frank Lucero. Best Homemado Mexican Food in the Valley! Jeff Sorenson was next in 77-5- line with 17 points. Center Ted Snow sat out much of the game due to foul trouble. Snow picked up three fouls early in the first quarter and didnt make another appearance until the third quarter when he picked up another foul as soon as he went in. Snow was pulled out of the game again to avoid having him foul out. Coach Paul Dilley said, It's quite unusual for Ted to foul like that. I'm sure it was just a bad night. One of the keys to the Cyprus victory was turnovers. The Pirate defense forced 23 turnovers from the Jaguars. Marty Jones was the defensive player of the game. Nearly half of the steals against West Jordan were his. n The Pirates played a pressure Coach defense the entire night. Dilley said the defense kept the Jaguars from any penetration and it would frustrate them. They would make a bad pass or lose the ball on a steal. Coach Dilley said West Jordan is still a young team in its early stages of development, and should be praised for doing as well as it does in such a short man-toma- time. Coach Dilley gave much of the credit in the West Jordan victory to his bench. He said, We play an exhausting defense and e need reserves to go in there and keep the pressure on as well as give our starters a rest. Its great to have a bench that can just step in and take over." He said the Pirates break is doing very well for the team. In the Spnngville game, the Pirates set a record of 25 assists, which Coach Dilley thought was unheard of for his team. Against West Jordan, the Pirates went on to break that previous record with 26 assists.
