Show THE WEST MOUNTAIN TIMES, DECEMBER 3, 1981, PAGE EIGHT Pirates survive 18 turnovers to defeat Red Devils in season opener at Springville By MIKE GYGI Tima Camsptmdm MAGNA The Cyprus Pirates got their season off to a good, running start by defeating the Springville Red Devils, in Fridays opener at Springville. Springville ran up an early eight-poilead in the first quarter, but once the Pirates got their running game going, there was no stopping them. The Pirates shot 56 percent from the floor compared to the Red Devils 38 percent. The Pirates however were not quite as line. They impressive at the 61 shot to percent compared Springvilles 73 percent. The Pirates outrebounded the Red Devils 40-2but turned the ball over 18 times on bad passes, fumbles and violations. The Pirates received excellent scoring 85-7- nt free-thro- w from Jeff Sorenson and Pete Sefakis, with 21 a piece, and Ted Snow had the team high with 22. Marty Jones who is still making the transition from defensive end to forward fouled out late in the fourth quarter along with Kent Rydalch. The game teetered with a two-an- d four-poilead until the fourth quarter when the Pirates really started to run. Coach Paul Dilley said he felt this was due to his teams better condition. He said, 'We just ran them down and tired them out. The Pirates played a motion game on offense which enabled them to get inside nt quite often, and their zone defense helped set up many of the defensive boards which the Pirates overpowered and led to many fast breaks where a good majority of their points came from. Coach Dilley commented that the defense was not the strongest part of his team's game. He said they need to get better position and not as much fouling with reaching inside. He also said that the Pirates were going to need much better foul shooting as well. Friday the Pirates will take on West Jordan at 7:30 p.m. at West Jordan. Coach Dilley said he did not know too much about the Jaguars, basically because West Jordan is a new school with a new coach.
