CARVER, Mr. and Mrs. Edward, 3814 Vitro tailings CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 problem, according to Gibbons, because smokers have paralyzed the follicles nonsmokers use to filter out dust panicles. Smokers inhale more of the radioactive radon gas and retain it longer, said Gibbons. Gibbons said the removal project could still be the victim of federal cutbacks. Although removal has been completed at one site, Firehouse Number One, Gibbons said at least 17 more sites exist where buildings were built on the finely ground ore. Initially, the Vitro tailings were thought to be an excellent fill dirt at least until the radioactive health hazar-- d was detected. It wasnt until ten years ago that people became aware of it, said Gibbons. He said uranium was originally mined around Moab for use in the World War 11 and post-wnuclear armament program. The radioactive gas is released as the uranium turns to lead, said Gibbons. And any radioactive substance can cause cancer. Gibbons said nearly 50 sites exist in Salt Lake County where Vitro tailings have been used for fill dirt, and total removal may be impossible. We have always been aware there was a possibility the tailings might never be moved but rather be buried at the main site, Marriott said. Personally, I am reluctant to endorse that idea because of the unknown long-tereffects, even though it may prove to be economically more feasible. Marriott also said a feasibility study required by the National Environmental Policy Act (known as the NEPA study), on neutralizing the tailings at the main site on 3300 South in Salt Lake City and burying them there, is due within the next three or four weeks. 5423 South 401 5 West Phone 769-314- 1 VALLEY V, EST HOSPITAL BEAGLEY, Mr. and Mrs. Steven G., 3100 South, 7585 West Magna, daughter.
