Mormon pioneers PRO O The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Aoung University is expanding us oral history program to interview people whose parents were married between 1880 and 1904 and who grew up in a Mormon household. Jessie Louise Embry, director of the oral history program, said the center is conducting the interviews to determine what Mormon frontier family lite was like around the turn of the century. Some of the questions to be answered are: what role did the family play in leaching religious principles? How was family organized and conducted? And how were responsibilities divided among family members? "We are looking lor volunteers who are willing to be interviewed for this project," the director said. "We are especially interested in people w ho grew up in Utah, Arizona and the Mormon colonies in Mexico and Canada. The interviews will be conducted by trained oral historians and be recorded on tape for transcription and editing, she explained. Free copies of the transcripts will be given to interviewees for their personal histones. These interviews will give us a better understanding of the role that the family played in the LDS Church and in the Mormon environment in the late 1800s and early 1900s," Embry said. These scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, judged by high school grades, SAT or ACT test scores, and extracurricular activities, to young men and women who will be graduating from high school at the end of this school year. The scholarships pay for college tuition, books, fees, and other educational expenses. They also pay the student $100 per month during each academic year. The value of these scholarships and the ROTC Program to students and their parents is readily apparent. However, there is a frequently overlooked benefit to our nation and its armed forces. Through this program the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps get outstanding young men in the true citizen soldier tradition. Applications for Army and Navy scholarships must be submitted by Dec. 1 and Air Force applications by Jan. ar 15. You still have time . . . to start your set with a free place setting.
