Show .'O' ;fvES N Granger's "South Pacific" warms a large audience Murder" performed masterfully By David Noyce stifled by his mother, Larrys mannerisms and British accent were excellent, fitting his role. Had the entire cast been able to sustain that quality of accent, the production would have been that much better. Cheryl Grondahl was commendable as Miss Marple, the crime solver. She added a spark to the play and achieved the audience's comIf plete attention when she stated: theres going to be a murder, there must certainly be a victim. Inspector Craddock, placed by Theron Reed, was yet serious. He was a combination of Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Clouseau and Joe Friday. This made Craddock quite an entertaining character. The play could have been better had the intended humorous portions apDenise McClaren and Theron Reed face otf as Inspector Craddock and the peared more spontaneous. Often amateur mystery performers tip viewers off with a sudden glance the wrong way at the wrong time or by acting overly innocent, automatically leading spectators to a conclusion of guilt. Maria Brown turned in a solid performance as Letitia Blacklock. Initially the character seemed too dull, but Marias consistency with that mundane attitude became an important part of the plot. The Friday performance of the popular musical by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammersiem II delighted a audience. The opening curtain was about 15 minutes late, but the minor inconvenience was soon foigotten. Ihe cast kept up a brisk tempo, perhaps too quick at times as some supporting actors seemed to be rushing their lines. Another problem was the periodic loss of sound, making it difficult to hear all of the dialogue and detracting from the overall quality of the production. The beautiful voices of actresses Jennifer Christensen, who played Lnsign Nellie Forbush, and DeNae Powers, who took the role of Bloody Mary, highlighted the evening. Christensen was outstanding while singing "Im Gonna Wash That Man and Im in Right Outa My Hair, Love With a Wonderful Guy. Powers offered a superb rendition of Ball Hai. Leigh Thorup acted the part ot French plantation owner Emile DeBecque. While Thorups singing voice was adequate, his French accent y was weak. 1 The album Black & Wh i te ( Planet Elek-tr- a from The Pointer Sisters, may surprise the trio's fans with its straight ahead, no nonsense set of ten tunes that are seemingly contained, concentrated performances. Troy Dial (Lt. Joseph Cable, U.S.M C.) and pretty Chari Collotzi (Bloody Mary's daughter Liat) were both fine in their roles. Stuart Roundv and Khnt Heywood played Capt. George "Iron Belly" Brackett and Cmdr. W illiam Harbison, the commanding officers at the U.S. base. Their performances seemed somewhat inhibited and they didnt convey a sense of peril over the dangerous mission undertaken by DeBecque and Cable. Ihe DeBecque children, Candy Cook and Kyle Kunder, were an audience favorite. Adding to the overall quality of the musical were the orchestra, choruses and dancers directed by Gary Jensen, Christy Olsen and Nancy Mehew, respectively.
