With the help of her minister at the Baptist Church, Diviney set out to find and work with people who need someone the widowed, the elderly, the handicapped. She set no requirements as to age, sex, or religion. It just bothered her that there were people who needed friends. Now, almost three years later, the group she organized is known as Dimple Darlings' and attracts an average of Octavia rnr 35 local people to its weekly Tuesday meetings. We are providing that age, sex, and religion doesn't make a difference. It works if you want it to," said Diviney, 4340 West 5215 South. Were successful because everyone is comfortable, said Diviney. There's no pressure involved. If its a strain, we just dont do it," said Diviney, who adds the main purpose of her group is to provide an atmosphere where friendships can flourish. Friendship seems to be enough, said Diviney. We talk things out and usually take care of just about anything one to one. We r dont sweat the little things," Diviney said in summary of her organizations philosophy. She said her Dimple Darlings do very little complaining though many face a number of physical limitations because they are handicapped or elderly. The main thing is sharing with one another being there when people need you, getting together as friends sharing with friends." Right now Dimple Darlings are in the midst of their Christmas activities. On Dec. 19 theyll be wrapping gifts and cards in preparation for their Dec. 22 Christmas party. Diviney said the local Girl Scouts do a tree for the party which is held yearly at the Baptist Church, 4445 West 5175 South, that sponsors the group. The Baptist Church backs us right down the line, said Diviney. Treats and a light lunch are on the Christmas party agenda, along with a visit from Santa Claus, who will distribute the gifts her Darlings have been busy preparing. On Dec. 23, theyll be delivering gifts to members of the group unable to attend the party. Christmas is one of the larger activities for the group with as many as 50 to 60 participants expected. The party, to be held from 3:30 p.m. at the Baptist Church, is open to the group's friends as well as the general public. But behind the excitement of Christmas and parties, Diviney quietly continues her search for more people who need people. I haven't found the starving people like you always hear about, said Diviney. 1 hope its because they're not out there, but Im afraid we may be missing some. Our Christmas program is not limited to our group. We go out into the community. The need doesnt have to be financial but emotional. We do need more new volunteers now," said Diviney. Diviney's daughter-in-laDebbie, is the group's youngest volunteer at 27. The oldest is Allinc Stanley, 74. Other volunteers include Jcanine Rushton, Cleone Hess, and Helen Keskey. Diviney said the group takes Dimple Darlings name from her first name. Dimple.
