Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 23, 1978 By DAVE WIGHAM Following Region One action on Tuesday the playoff picture looks like this. IF VIEWMONT wins on Friday then they would be tied with the loser of the Layton and SkyView game for fifth and sixth place In the region. The two schools would then playoff with each other for those spots If Viewmont loses Friday then they would be sixth and would automatically have to playoff with a Salt games left all of thpm have legitimate shots st winning the crown. Also at stake Is the possibility of a playoff versus an automatic berth into the 3A tournament to be held at Weber State College the second week in March. All this means that every game from here on In is thut much more Important than the previous one By DAVE WIGHAM Last week 1 had the opportunity to attend the state wrestling tournament at the University of Utah for the 4A schools since some of our local athletes were involved. out. Of the top four schools in the meet, Brighton, Weber, Viewmont and Bountiful, three of them are from Region One. That's right, three of the top four teams came from somewhere outside of Salt Lake City. In fact as one can see two of those schools are from Davis County. This is an indication to me that both Davis County and Region One have some great talent in the wrestling area. THE WRESTLING programs in this area don't get much recognition, from school support, etc. more than it has in the past years but compared to the smaller schools the support is minimal. Take for example the Wasatch team, they had the whole school and town at the tournament, including the pep band. These smaller schools realize the dedication the athletes have to have and they support them. All in all the wrestling year in this area was a great one. Interest went up throughout, as evidenced with the dual number of spectators at the Bountiful-Viewmomeet. The athletes and coaches are improving each year. nt AS WITNESSED last week when the top teams from throughout the state gather, this area has some of the best around. These two will be more concerned with stopping the Weber guards from scoring too much in this contest, theyll let their big people score and concentrate on stopping the opposition THE interesting fact about the scoring stats is that the when you read this story the first game, Roy at Clearfield will be history. In the second game Weber fans will get to see two clubs who definitely believe in the u scoring in the double figures, he can score when he has to and Friday he just might have to Wallace, Brian Johnson and Russell Florence. The Davis team travels to Woods Cross is a game that means a lot to both SINCE THE Salt Lake City people, the press mainly, like to talk about their dominance of certain sporting events, let's take a look at how the 4A tournament came WILDCAT big man Mark MiCleery ha been a steady performer for Coach Wayne Baker and is averaging 20 points game from his center spot. Alter a slow start, probubly getting football out of his system, Troy Howard has come on strong and Is currently scoring at a 17 point per game dip. These two will be going head to head on both ends of the floor this week. In the first meeting the Darts tried a mun for man defense in the first half and McCleery ate them alive, then when the Darts awliched to a zone the Woods Cross bunch hud their problems getting their big man the bull. WOODS Cross enters the game, depending again on what huppened Tuesday when the Wildcats played hosts to Ogden and the Darts hosted Box Elder, with a little revenge on their minds Going Into Tuesday night action the Wildcats were a game behind the Darts, that means they could either be tied or two games behind when the two square off on top of the league standings and with only a couple of Area Well Represented In Wrestling Tournament of late. games, both huve one aguinst the not so strong clubs and the other game against one of the other top clubs.
