Dear Friends and Fellow Citizens: Iliave tried to ignore the false and unwarranted attack made upon my record by my opponent for the office of District Attorney because I did not want to enter into a smear campaign and because I believed my opponent had been ill advised. , Shortly after my opponent started his smear campaign I went to him and requested an explanation for his unwarranted misrepresentations. He advised me that if it required a smear campaign I to win he intended to use such tactics as he wanted the office at any cost. However, since a group of voters and friends have taken issue with my opponents tactics I feel I must rise to my own defense lest some be misled by my silence. For the past three years I have been the Assistant District Attorney and as such have handled 263 cases assigned to' me by the District Attorney. Of these cases I have secured 234 convictions and there have been 9 acquittals and 19 dismissals. However, disposition of all cases were made at the direction of the District Attorney in conjunction with the court, a fact of which my opponent is ' V ; ' well aware. The records of the county clerk will clearly show that my opponent has misrepresented the truth and I invite you to check my record and to compare the of the candidates by making-inquirCounty Attorney, judges, law enforcement officers and members of my profession as to the. efficiency with which I have performed my office. I am sure that most of you are aware of the fact that the District Attorney has a dual purpose, that of protecting the innocent as well as prosecuting the guilty and the efficiency of the District Attorney's Oifice is not based on tho number of convictions but upon the basis that justice has been done, and the rights of all have been protected. It is easy to find fault and criticize but I believe a candidate for public oifice should base his campaign on his own merits father than that of smear and -.criticism of his opponent. , Sincerely, ( L.
