Which is sometimes expressed hy saving it is a rose between two thorns; the meat in the sandwich; or between the upper and the nether millstones. In the choice of metaphors so much depends on the point of view. With regard to ita activities, however, the people of Davis county are sometimes inclined to be lieve that the comparison with the buffers on the railroad cars, or with the cereal in the grinding machine, is the more proper, Davis county's problems have been twice, recently, presented to the state road commission. At these meetings it was pointed out that the county is, for tax paying purposes, largely a strip of farming land on each side of the road between Salt Lake City and Ogden. This strip is prevented from expanding far by the mountains on the one side and the Great Salt Lake on the other. It was variously estimated that anywhere from 75 to 90 per cent of the traffic on the state road through Davis coun ty is traffic between Salt Lake City and Ogden. Further is was' pointed put that about all that Davis county gets out of the ordinary traveler be- twene these two cities is a blinding cloud of dust and a smothering whiff of gasoline. The road which a few years ago was considered a tolerably good road for vehicle traffic will not begin to stand up under the stress of modern automobile traffic; the cost of maintenance is something enormous, considering the length of the road. On the other hand, the cost of a road that will stand such traffic, for a time at so least, is also extremely heavy heavy that it is virtually out of the question to consider building it in one year by means of taxing abutting property, or, what virtually amounts to the same thing, by taxing the entire ' s county, Under such traffic conditions, it is but natural that Davis county should object even to paying one-hathe cost of constructing such a roadway. Indeed the state road commission Is on record as considering that the little county between Salt Lake and Weber is doing well to offer to pay One prominent Davis county taxpayer protested that if he had been at the meeting at which this ciuestion was discused, he would have strongly Urged that his countv be asked to pay road-buildi- Total assessment of live stock.
