At the Hotel Utah the Utah Farm Bureau was resoluting and appointing committees to force a higher price for farm products. At the Salt Lake commercial club the City Federation of Women's clubs was protesting and resoluting against the hijph price of sugar, butter and eggs. Many men who have much to say about the high cost of food products are in the same category with wealthy women. Many men will pay tWrenCrfor an egg in a glass of booze and balk at 5 cents when called on to take it home to his family. The average man who lives in the city is just as bad in this particular as the booze hister. Many men who are enjoying a salary of from $5 to $8 per day rejoice in the fact that they are keeping their family in some one's house at a less cost than they could afford to own it, and consequently have no desire to own property. Among this type of men are the brotherhood of railway employees, who have recently bulldozed the president and congress into raising their wages; bankers, professional men, capitalists and business men. Mr. Gompers was one of the main guys for the increase of wages to railroad men, and now he is leading the protest against the high cost of Mr. Gompers wants to sell living. high and buy cheap. But what of the farmer who wants high prices for his product? Is he not justified? Most assuredly he is. The farmers are not individually the rich men of America or any other country. He wants a good price for his product. He has his all invested in his farm plant which is taxed to the limij while the salary man escapes the tax collector and enjoys the fruits of his labor without contributing to the maintenance of society. The capitalist who builds mill, sugar factories, canning establishments and all manner of food producing concerns is in the same class with the farmer, inasmuch as every salaried man, both large and small, is seeking to cut down the cost of his product, and it is also true that very frequently the farmer joins the fight against Mm. One year ago canned tomatoes sold all over Utah at less than cost of production but we don't remember that meetings were held all over the land in the interest of the tomato c aimers.
