Jim Cleverly at Viewmont and U ILL d THIS is the most the league has been in a long time No team is that much ahead of any of the others In the region meet any one of five or six teams could ach school has win the title strengths and weaknt sses One of the reasons the It ague is balani ed this year is that Clearfield lost Robbie Richeson who has dominated the sprinting events for the past three years Robbie is now at Utah doing his thing on the football fold well-balance- Rodger Reid at Clearfield have both decided to siep aside lor different reasons, JIM AT1 S? v down to become the new athletic director at Viewmont while Rodger will go back to college at Brigham Young and work on his master's degree while working with the baseball program at the step F sc hool Coach Cleverly has been the only coach that the Vikings have known in basketball, most of the other sports have seen coac hes come and go but Jim has been the head roundball mentor at the school since it opened its doors All in all Jim has been a coach 17 years COACH REID has been at the Clearfield school for about five years and has become known as one of the finest coac hes in game situations He is well known for his routine on the bench, first the coat comes off then the tie and the sleeves roll up These two individuals have had a major effect on the lives of many youngsters who participated in basketball both at their schools and opposing teams They have reputations throughout the state as being a couple of tough customers to beat. A SALT LAKE City coach said of Jim Hes Cleverly, one of the best game coat lies in high school today He can analyze a game and make the right moves at the right time " Another coach noted of Rodger Reid, You always know when youre going to play one of his teams that thev will be ready He puts in a lot of hours after practice in preparation His clubs are always well prepared for their Steven Sabin, a student at Daves High School, has taken honors in the state science honors Steven Sabin, a senior at Davis High School, participated in the Slate Science F air at Weber State ( ollege. Apt il 5 and 6 HE FNTFRf D a project in the field of chemistry which was titled Mercury In Man Hesei out to determine science fair. whether certain occupations pose more of a threat to mercury contamination than other occupations. Steven received a third place award in the science reporting, second place with his floor display in physical sciences and an award from the United States Air Force as experienced success Each year both Viewmont and Clearfield make the trek into Salt Lake City for the state tournament Coach Cleverly saw one of his teams play for the state title only to finish second, he had another club beat in the semifinals bv two points. For the past several years the Clearfield team has been in the thick of the region title picture. These two men have given the citizens of Davis County many memorable nights and moments on the basketball floor. Both will be missed by those who enjoy high school sports. FINDING replacements for these two indiv iduals wont be easy but each school has a tradition to uphold and the successor for these two have some big shoes to fill. By DAVE WIGHAM - A mixture of youth and experience are the feature of the Clearfield tennis club. The Falcons feature five seniors, three juniors and six freshmen on their tennis roster THE THING that makes Coach Thorne happy about this situation is that the competition in practice is so keen that it prepares his club better for the region matches. Junior Todd Rankin holds down the number one singles spot and this seems to be the only certainty on the club each week. NUMBER two singles looks to be senior Lyle Cunning, a vastly improved player who takes his game seriously. r Number three singles is a battle between senior Neal Wayment and sophomore Kevin Nishijima. Each week these two stage challenge matches with each taking turns winning, they are that close. fea- tures senior Gary Phillips with either partnered or Nishijima. Wayment Whichever one of those two isnt playing singles teams with Phillips in doubles. This makes it rough for the Falcons to get any consistency out of the doubles. Number two doubles isnt any clearer than the first doubles team as each week three people fight for the two spots. Senior Gregg Osier, junior Tim McEntire and sophomore Mike Burwolf all Ekulbs Lock Shop Layton, Utah 376-466- By DAVE WIGHAM - WOODS CROSS Few schools can match the record of the Woods Cross gals in high school sports this year In their first year as a d high school, the Wildcat gals have won a gymnastics title, finished third in basketball in volleyball and fourth I RED BROWN is Steven's advance placement chemistry teacher at Davis High Steven is the son of Mr and Mrs Noel Ray Sabin of Kays ville nfSia U 4 NOT BAD for as young as the Cats are. So it's no wonder that the other schools are looking forward to some tough competi- tion from the Woods Cross gals track and field team. If things go as they have in the past the Cat females will be near the top m track as well. Last year Janet placed third in the state in the 4A battle each other for the posi- tion OTHER squad members who are always pushing these people for a spot on the varsity club are junior Dave Ray and sophomores Gregg Hess, Brian Larsen, Rich Miyawaki and Barry Kawa Some coaches dont agree that its wise to keep chang ing the doubles team around, they say settle on one team and let them work together for a while as a team THE OTHER side of the coin is that put your best people in the slots, and with Clearfield their best people arent the same each week With a lot of underclassmen on the club and working out each day the Clearfield tennis program has nowhere to go but up in the next few years i JUNIOR hris Mikesel, who placed eighth in region last year as a sophomore, loads the pack tn the hurdle events Senior Brian Johnson (rack championship and with a year behmd her, plus being in the 3A this year, Janet could very well take home an individual title hurdles Woods Cross has a good representation in the mile run with five girls slated to run Gina Cox, Lori Hougaard, f rancis Patrick, Patty Smiih and Carol Tallis give the Cats some good depth in this rate THE CATS have good depth the field events with many of their girls doubling along the way Vivian Barnes is in the javelin, Cathy Cooper the discus, Chim Creer the in is back after missing last Melanie Schouten the discus, I isa Thornton the long jump, and Dana Wilson in the dis-- i us Many of these gals have irticipated tn other sporting events at the school and have lasted the fruits of success and under the leadership of l each Sawley one can only i pe t the track to follow suit and finish high in the state p meet like to improve on his showing in the state meet.
