TRY GOING to either a or a basketball game or football battle and you better go early to get a seat. Yet in soccer, baseball or track you can go any time you want and see everything. Most obvious of the absentees are the girls of the pep club or the cheerleaders. I guess in school the girls are only required to attend the football and basketball games, this is wrong. Viewmont-Bountif- High School Tennis: No. One Singles IF A GIRL is in the pep club then they should be required to support all the school athletic activities, not just the big two. Maybe its the spring fever or something, but whatever it is, the students seem to want to do anything but support their teams in the spring time. d By DAVE WIGHAM High school athletics are supposed to be for the students enjoyment and benefit. Tennis seems to think TENNIS, SOCCER, track, baseball all suffer from lack of school support and attendance in the spring. Other sports throughout the year also have this same problem. A baseball player or a track runner puts in as much otherwise. TENNIS IS a great sport, in high school or anywhere else, but the high school coaches have a little rule that time, effort and sacrifice as any football or basketball player does, yet he doesnt receive the same recognition as the latter two. doesnt set right with me. It seems that the coaches decide who is going to play number one singles at each school. What if a player doesnt want to play first singles? THIS WEEK IS the deciding week in spring sports. The track and tennis teams have their region meets. Baseball will decide which two teams go on to the state tournament. Soccer also decided which two of their teams go to the state tournament. There are a lot of high school athletic activities that are going on this coming week. Call your favorite high school for their schedule and go support these athletes, dw FOR EXAMPLE suppose you, as a high school tennis player, are the best player in the school, yet you know there are a number of top players at the other high schools that can beat you. You also know that if you play number two or even number three singles you could probably take state. Well nothing doing, the coaches wont let you do it, you have to play number one singles for your school. Installation of new lights at the Davis High School tennis courts have just been completed by the Kaysville City Electrical Department, under the direction of Walter Meacham. THERE ARE six - 1500 watt fixtures on each cord and these new type lights are three times brighter than those previously used. Mr. Meacham said, they installed a total of 24 new fixtures and they are run on a timing clock basis. The lights go on automatically each morning early and off at 10:30 p m. each night, but will bypass on Sundays. THE LIGHTING of the tennis courts is a joint project between the Davis County School District and Kaysville City and with this new lighting, provides for a tremendous lighting system for the courts for all those who use them. It is extremely dry and they wish to remind the citizens to be more cautious to help eliminate the fire problems, np THE ABOVE example has happened more than once. I h know several school players that had to play first never even made it to the state playoffs, yet and singles they could have won the state crown at another position. The coaches say its supposed to stop what they call stacking a tournament. By this they mean a team cant drop their number one player to play number two and on down the line. Region Tito Sets Trail Meet Friday By DAVE WIGHAM This Friday at the stadium State College the Region Two track and field teams will meet to determine their champion for the year. of Weber IF THE dual meet results are any indication of what the teams are like, then the only remaining question to be decided at the region is by how far will the Clearfield team win. The Falcons have run away from everyone in head to head competition, but the region meet seems to always be full of surprises. Viewmont Coach Bob Ashdown noted that some athletes who didnt participate in any dual meets show up for the region meet. cHam-pionsh- ip THERE would have to be a lot of these type of athletes show up to prevent the Falcons from winning the championship. Clearfield has individuals that are favored and they also have the depth needed to win the team trophy. Leading the Falcons is their sprint man Robbie Richeson who has won every dual meet this year in both the 100 and 220. Laytons Tony Riney has been right on Robbies heals and should give a good showing in the region meet, but Richeson should win both sprints. CLEARFIELD should get first place points in the 440 with Ron Peterson wearing colors. Jeff the Falcons Trussel, another Falcon could finish in the top three but the Layton squad has a couple of good quarter milers themselves in Clint Douglas and DISCOUNT Don Douglas. The 880 yard run looks to be a two man dog fight between Bountifuls Terry Elton and Viewmonts Dan Pope. These two have battled each other four times this year, each finishing ahead of the other twice. BOUNTIFULS Dave Kriv-ane- c has the best time in the region for the mile run and should be favored, but he will be pushed by Carl Pond of Viewmont. The two mile race again looks like a Bountiful and Viewmont confrontation with Brave Steve Jenkins and Vike, Kelly Gibbs going at each other. Jenkins is coming off sickness but should be at full strength for this meet. FIELD events are probably the most unpredictable of all sporting events, an off day can throw everything off. Shot put should belong to Viewmonts Dave Pearce who has by far the best toss in dual meets. Second is up for grabs with Bountifuls Paul Stout and Clearfield's Bob Berrera given best shots. Long jump competition should be highly competitive with several individuals having a good chance at winning. Best bet would be Clearfields Rod Neville with Bountifuls Mark Dickerson and Laytons Tony Riney right behind him. pit By DAVE WIGHAM Two basketball players from Region Two have been selected to participate in the fourth annual Utah High School All-StCharity ar Games. Lomond each have received . invitations to play for the state team. The games, sponsored by the Utah Cerebral Palsy Association, will be played on July 29 at Logan and on July 30 in Provo.
