NALPER, Stake Presidency. U. OF U. NEWS NOTES With the aim of having a student band and more than that number of students in the orchestra, Professor Thomas Giles, head of the music department of the University of Utah, is planning the biggest year in music that the state university has ever had. The University of Utah orchestra was the largest college orchestra in America during the past year of school, according to Professor Giles, who has made a thorough study of music in American universities. Next year the orchestra is expected to be larger than last. Plans are now being made to take the university orchestra to the world fair which will be held at Portland, Ore., in 1925. More than 450 students were enrolled in the nine various musical organizations on the University of Utah campui last year. Three new instructors will be added to the music faculty this year. The annual grand opera will be presented by the Utah students during the coming year and plans are being made for a big musical festival to be staged at the Salt Lake tabernacle by the university musical organizations some time in the spring. 100-pie- nmn-fnt- l i . -- - ''..I' 1 ' t ' 'l'C 'ii die can i u- - - ik i'll''!)- I't lu!"i-- ,' - h.ne do-irc- d l'f i ! i i irt meet-Saturda- y, last year. OUR ANNUAL CONFLAGRATIONS It is an historic fact that the American people bum up each year property that in value is equal to the cost of carrying on the national government in times of peace. A great national fire prevention xxpoaition is to be held in New York next October for the education of the public In the line of reducing the annual conflagration losses. This is all part of an educational campaign to educate the masses of the people from children to adults to be careful In handling inflamable matter and setting fires.
