Utahs law, senate bill No. effective 12, by Southwiclc, became Monday at midnight when tobacco dealers generally within the state laid aside their stocks of cigarettes and cigarette papers and declared they will observe the law, regardless of personal opinions in the matter. So far as could be learned there was a general observance of the new statute the first day and confirmed smokers were free in their expressions of a desire to make the law as effective as possible, The new order has been put in effect with no riffle in the ordinary current of the citys activities. While a few infractions of the new law against smoking in public places were noticed in the city and county building this morning, the law was Opinions quite generally observed. differ as to where smoking may be indulged jnjn a public building, but a majority of the officials have taken the position that it is banned only in such offices" and parts of offices as are public in the sense that the general public comes in contact with them. It is generally construed that the law does not contemplate the abolishment of smoking in the private office of a public official though that office is in a public building. Accordingly, while there was practically no smoking in the corridors and front offices in the city and county building, some persons so indulged in private offices.
