S SECOND DAY Morning A DEMONSTRATION LECTURE expert bearing the . rz: autrorized message of the Food Administration; "Mobilizing American Kitchens to Help Win the War ban THINK IT OVER In 1917 many new sugar factories were built in the west and the future of this industry looked bright No sooner were these factories ready to handle a greatly Increased . tonnage than agitation 'torn started an undemand farmers the among heard of price for beets or refuse' to raise them. The government price set on sugar placed a definite limit on amount fac tories could pay for beets. To satisfy the beet growers a fed oral commission was appointed to investigate and set a price which it did, slightly higher than already of fered by companies, giving the farm era double the prices paid before the war. The sugar companies accepted the government price and made every ef fort to secure increased acreage so earnestly urged by the . government, but influences beyond their control seemed to he working against the sugar industry and the result is that according to the best estimates sugar beet acreage will show a marked decrease at a time when increased production was most essential. One of the wests great industries has suffered severely and several communities, which will lose sugar factories and others in which factories will not operate, will realize too late that it is not the agitator who maintains payrolls and pays tves, but industries whom the agitators attack. Incidentally many persons now realize that the campaign against raising sugar beets has been a great aid to Germany in cutting rather than increasing our beet sugar production at this critical time.
