Epperson, No. dw COUNTY ROSES IN CALIFORNIA Robert Miller, manager of the Miller Floral company, of Farmington, is in California on business and taking a well earned rest. It will be a surprise to tbe people Utah to learn that many of, the qf ' roses grown by the Miller company this. winter are finding a market in Pasadena and Los Angeles, however, such is a fact. The chief sales head- quarters for these Utah roses is in the Maryland hotel, in Pasadena, where the Dowers have created a decided ' sensation. Talk about carrying coal to Newcastle! Well, after all, if one wants the best on earth they must come or send to Davis county for it. When our people realize this fact fruit and vegetables will cease to go to waste in Davis county, as they have up to this DAVIS time. -- OLEARY ON THE MEXICAN SITUATION Mr. Editor, dear sir A while ago, for me sins, I was worruking In a copper mine in Mexico, at least I had the job of bossing a gang of peens who was stripping a lode; they worruking and me a sittin in the shade with a pipe and a bottle of pulque and yellin at em when they slacked. Any white man hearing me might have thought I was swearing fierce as about half the haythen were named Jaysus. Well, what I was getting at is this: I learned .their lingo and sometimes when I wasn't yellin to one of them Jsysuses Id hear em confabbing betwixt each other and learned their 1 most and understanding ways thorough, so that now Im fit to tell Mr, Lansing or Mr. Wilson or whoever Is running the Merican question just : What to do and how to do it. There is about fifteen millions of people there barring whats killed each other or gotten born since old Port Ferry Diaz was bounced. Perhaps there are three or four thousand of them, barring foreigners, that own land beyont the cities. At any rate, of the nine million blooming peens not one of them ever hoped for so much as six feet to bury himself in,' but that isn't saying he dont want it if he can get it. Now its them poor peens does the fighting. Its like this, you catch a peen and tell him to do anything, frown Fierce, and offer him a big enough hat, and by the Holy Mary betwixt joy and fear he ups and does it whatever it is. Wheen Mr. Caryonza or Willy or Zapata wants volunteers they go and catch a bunch of peens and put the bracelets on em and bring them to the seat of war. Then they take the handcuffs off and give them a swell hat (a hat is all a Mexican cares about in the clothes line) and a rifle and cartridge belt. Then Willy, or whoever it is, comes along and makes terrible faces at em and says, "Me brave boys, go forward and fight. If you come back beaten or desert 111 take your hats away and hae you perforated by a firing squad. The last part of the threat didnt bother them much'. They'd just about as lief be dead anyway, but the idea of losing that hat makes them turn, pale and they goes in and fights Just as he told them and then some and no monkey business about it. But thats pretty near over now. What with all the batjles and skirm ishes and deaths by disease, Willys survivors own about eight hats apiece of the very swellest styles and even Caryonzas men have three or four apiece. Hats are getting to be as common as a garlic breath is to all of -- -- v them. x Now theres just two things them peens want next to hats One fs an acre or two of land to grow and chicken tamarleys on, and the free-hole- ys other a burro. The burro dont need, to be bigger than a mereeny sheep, but just so its got long ears and is some mangy, it would be the pride of . a peens life; r , Idea to is send me and some My friends I could name as inoice to put. up. this talk to them peens. Jaysuses, we say to them, "Git together and stop this fighting. What extra-the-ordina- ry -- the heck are you fighting wed say. Ain't you got all the hats your families will need from now to Judgment. Dont you fight no more fpr Willy or old Caryonza neither. You just git together and turn round and say, 'Uncle Sam, you come right back down here, we want you, and Ill tell you what your y Unclell do, hell give everyone a garden and a real mangy burro ears." When they with eighteen-inc- h hears that youll hear then! yell for Uncle Sam clear back to. Washington. And Uncle Sam could do it, too. Theres plenty of land thats been con fiscated two or three tinjes by every president, general or bahdit among them and cant belong to anyone by this time. Just divide that up and the burros, lord, theyre dear at five dol lars Mexican; twenty million dollars would clean that up and cheap it would be for a happy, contented addition to the states. You could fix old Caryonza and Willy and all the rest of them, too. Give em jobs as car conductors or policemen or any other job with a chance for a hold-bac- k or graft and be all tickled to death. theyll Id suggest salaries for the invoke of about five thousand dollars, except me, who ought to be boss at ten thousand.
