Show MYWEBERMEDIA.COM WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2016 THE SIGNPOST 9 Wildcat hurdler striving for Moore BY CYDNEE GREEN sports reporter Weber State kicked off their indoor track and field season on Dec. 4 with their first meet, the Weber State Indoor Invitational. There are many great athletes on the WSU track and field team, but there are only a few who consistently place in the top ranks. One such athlete is junior Tawnie Moore. Ogden native Tawnie Moore took an interest in track and field in junior high school and followed that passion into high school and college. “I remember it like it happened yesterday. I saw a hurdle and thought this would be kind of fun,”said Moore during an interview. “I tried to jump over it and slammed my face on the ground. From that moment, I knew this was something that I wanted to pursue and get better at.” Moore currently holds the Fremont High School 100-meter hurdle record, the Weber State University 60-meter hurdle record and is on the list of top 10 all-time track and field athletes for other events in the nation. Moore believes her ultimate achievement this far in her career is “breaking the school record last indoor season and getting featured in the Standard Examiner. The recognition was humbling and I am thankful for all of my athletic ability.” Last season, Moore broke the record at WSU for the 60-meter hurdles and moved up in the rankings for the 55-, 60- and 100-meter hurdles. Moore had the opportunity to travel to California and compete with the nation’s best athletes at the Mt. Sac Cross Country Invitational where she scored and lettered. Although there are many great track and field athletes competing in the Big Sky Conference, Moore is a force to be reckoned with. “I feel like with my mindset for success and my passion for competition, I can not only set my own expecta- SCIENCE WEEKLY by: KELLIE PLUMHOF Estrogen combats influenza As the winter months continue to progress, more people are sniffling, sneezing and ending up at home on bed rest. The culprit is none other than influenza, more commonly known as the flu. Recently, a new study was published in the American Journal of Physiology that shows that estrogen, the female sex hormone, may have antiviral effects. This would mean that women don’t feel the effects of the flu as intensely as their male counterparts. During the study, researchers collected samples of nasal cells from both male and female subjects. Researchers decided on using nasal cells since these cells are the most infected by the flu virus. Collected cells were exposed to the flu virus, specifically the influenza A virus. Three different types of cultures were exposed to the virus including estrogen, bisphenol A and selective estrogen receptor modulars, also known as SERM. The researchers observed that estrogen, bisphenol A and SERM decreased the replication of the flu virus in the cells. According to Sabra Klein from John Hopkins University, the lead investigator on the study, said the research being done was unique from those in the past in that they were able to identify the actual estrogen receptor, called estrogen receptor beta, that produced the antiviral effects. The findings of the study done by Klein and others at John Hopkins help to support evidence shown in an earlier study, using animals, that showed estrogen helped protect against the flu virus. “Other studies have shown that estrogens have antiviral properties against HIV, ebola and hepatitis viruses,” Klein said. While estrogen may have antiviral effects, it may be difficult to observe in the general population. This is due, according to Klein, to the fact that premenopausal women have estrogen levels that cycle. However, Klein believes that some premenopausal women (those on specific types of birth control) and postmenopausal women may find themselves with a better chance of avoiding the flu or feeling the full effects of the disease. Researchers believe in the potential of estrogens, usually used to treat infertility and menopause, being used for protection against the flu virus. In preparation for her season, Moore says she “embraces the unexpected outcomes in whatever situation I am in.” She tries “being open to new experiences that may alter the way my previous mindset was present to be. Instead of turning down the unknown due to subliminal fear, (I) turn to face and take these situations head on. Fearlessly.” For this season, Moore has been focusing heavily on her technical abilities. “Of course we train every day for speed, but I have been solely focused on my technique and what I can PHOTO BY GABE CERRITOS | THE SIGNPOST Tawnie Moore runs the hurdles with a GoPro. Moore plans to finish her degree at Weber State University in organizational communications and push towards her fundamental dream: racing in the Olympics. Moore will join her team on the road to Pocatello, Idaho, where they will race in the Snake River Open on Jan. 15. The latest update for Windows came this past summer. While Macintosh is a very popular computer, most people use Windows. For those of us on the Windows team, here are some helpful hints for using the operating system and its new update. These are some of the features that I have used and explored the most. CORTANA Cortana is Microsoft’s response to Apple’s Siri. Just like Siri, Cortana is a program used to open apps, organize appointments and operate as a personal assistant. You can ask her just about anything, but it will take awhile for her to learn how you speak. For those who want to, you can even give Cortana a sample of your voice so that she will only listen to you. The downside to this is that if your microphone is not as good, she will have a hard time getting the right words. Also, she will open up Bing to search for topics in an effort to get users on that search engine. A quick fix for that is to get an extension on Google Chrome that will open Google instead. If you like to keep your info private, this is not for you. Cortana requires use of your location and other information to work. GAME CAPTURE That’s right, Windows 10 does come with a game-capturing software. By hitting the windows key and G you can record some of the games you play. The feature also works on web browsers, game apps and even Minecraft. It can record the game and whatever sound is coming out of the speakers. However, this does not work with all games, and some trial and error may occur. 3-D MODELING I was surprised when I found this app loaded in Windows 10. This program is a pretty simple 3D modeling app with only a few features. However, the nice thing about it is that when you’re done, the model can be ordered and shipped right to you. The prices are a bit on the high end, but if you are using it for class or for a work related project, it’s pretty nice. MUSIC Did you like Windows Media player, or wished that there was something better? Windows 10 now comes with Groove Music. Like iTunes, you can listen and add all of your music to this app and enjoy your music. There is also a subscription option that lets you stream and listen to any song in their database. NOTIFICATION AND START MENUS The start menu is now back in business. A lot of people complained about Windows 8 and the fact that it did not have the classic start menu. This menu works like the previous version, but has a more smartphone feel to it. Also, a notification area was added that has everything that you need to know at anytime. It has everything from connecting to a projector or Wi-Fi or even changing to a tablet mode for those who have a Windows Surface. While writing this, I found quite a few features that were fun to use. Although I haven’t gone over everything, you can take the time to find out other interesting applications to use on your Windows 10 computer. Remember, Windows 10 is still fairly new, so who knows how much more is to come. Comment on this story at wsusignpost.com I save lives. You can too! Donate blood-plasma.
