Show The Weber Herald! Published By The Associated Students Of Weber College Vol . May 9, 1934 No. 17 FELLOW STUDENTS: We are told that the Associated Students of Weber College is a distinct governing body babed upon the theory that men are capable of governing themselves. It is a beautiful illusion a statement, not of what is, but of what should be. What is the soverei gnty of the student body organization? Where does its power, if any, end, and that of the college faculty and administration heads begin? These are questions without answers. We cannot go to the constitution because the constitution does not exist, or if it does exist it is kept in some dark and dusty spot where it is safe from the peering eyes of the curious or the scrutiny of the reformer. And so we may say that the sovereignity of our little government is undefined except on those occasion -.vlien it is interpreted by the college President or the department heads. As a result the college authorities have been exercising too great a control over our student government. Although their motives may be of a commendable nature, they tread on sacred ground when they tread on the ground of the student self-government. It is time that we as students tackle the whole responsibility of governing. We as students pay fifteen dollars per year to the students' association. Yet the student officers exercise little control over this money. On the other hand the school authorities have actually spent the student body money and asked for it later in board of control. The vote there is a mere formality. The student body does not have any idea of how much money it really has. Our officers have attempted all year to obtain a report from the school treasurer. Only delay has resul ted. In conclusion would say that we owe our school head our deepest respect and our sincerest admiration, but we firmly believe that ours should be the right to govern ourselves, and believing as we do, we must of necessity rebel against being jealously tied to the apron strings of the faculty. Once again the staff of the Herald proves its superiority in accurate observa t ion--i t hereby informs the student body that if they will observe on the right and left as they enter the gymnasium they will see that the noble busts which once graced the apertures on either side are there no more. Who stole the statues? What an opportunity for school detectives! Did the Senator take them in order to pattern his countenance after that of the noble Roman? Did some youth see in that ancient maiden a fairer female than any our college could provide? Is it the prank of some college group with high school minds? Who stole the statues? It is not disclosed who the couple were. But did their years of undoubted clandestine association culminate in their daring elopement? We believe not, for staring across the entrance has satisfied them these long years. It looks distinctly like theft. Who stole the statues? GIRLS' DANCE; The spring quarter girls' dance will still be held at the Berthana Roman Gardens May 11, despite the information in the Sunday Standard Examiner and around the school to the effect that it would be held in the Weber Gym ballroom. The affair will be semi-formal and the price 75s a counle. WEBER SCORES AGAIN: Education and engineering students ranked highest in a recent psychological test given 300 Weber college students by John Benson, head of the education department. Compared to other schools taking the test, Weber ranked very favorably. The scores, however, have not been reveald. CHESS UPSETS: Two major upsets occurred in the chess tournament when Lowell James defeated Mr. Neville, chief faculty threat, and Lynn Roberts eliminated Dale Robbins, the defending champion. Both dark horses advanced to the semi final round in opposite brackets, o FLASH: Election ends! No lives lost! Cleon Kerr will pilot the student body ship through the storms of 1934-35. He will be assisted by Beth Francis, Norman Christenson, and Keith Berkin. CONGRATULATIONS. |
