It is the student activities that go a long way toward making it a success or failure. In former years Weber has been known largely through this medium, but this year, our activities have had a slow start, especially in the intellectual contests and many are inquiring as to the reason of this. Of course the "flu" has been one of the causes but the entire blame cannot be placed on the epidemic. For some reason or another, the faculty has not encouraged organizations, such as the "Thinkers' Club" or "Fine Arts Club" of last year. What is the reason? These organizations were of greaet value to the students and there is no reason why they should not be continued. A student does not remember the details of an English or history lesson, but thru association with other students, he does learn how to think and express himself intelligently. Lessons develop the sense of research and teach him how to look for information but they do not teach the fellowship and intimacy that a student gets in the clubs and activities of the school. They are things that he will carry with him throughout life. There have been a number of improvements made by the president and faculty which are of benefit to the students and were hailed with delight by them. The formation of physical education classes was of benefit to all, giving everyone an opportunity to lay the foundation of a strong constitution. The introduction of five minute talks by students into the devotional exercises will bring marked development along that line. However, there is still room for many improvements. The extempo contests should have been well under way by this time but as yet nothing has been done. Debating is at a standstill while oratory has not even been mentioned. A large portion of the fault lies with the stu-dentbody officers who should have charge of this work and who should see that it is under way. There can be no doubt in the minds of any but that these activities are very important and should be encouraged. Peetitions for class plays have been refused because the school play must be produced first. The school play has been under discussion for a long time. It is hoped that it will be staged in the near future so that the classes will be given an opportunity to make use of the stage. Fellow students, Weber must progress. We cannot afford to go backward. It is the desire on the part of many progressive students for the immediate reorganization of the "Thinkers Club"; the starting of extemporaneous, debating and oratory contests and the staging of our school play. With these under way, we can look forward toward a successful year which will make this a school that Ogden will be proud of. Double U. Kay.
