Romney addressed the matter only briefly but pointedly in remarks to the Values Voters Summit, a gathering of cultural conservatives in Washington. Perry planned a day of campaigning in socially conservative northwest Iowa. On Friday, Perry answered simply "no" when asked if he thought Mormonism was a cult. But that did not appear likely to be the last word on the subject. Earlier in the day, Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress branded Mormonism a cult and said Romney is "a good moral person, but he's not a Christian," in remarks introducing Perry to a crowd. Perry accepted the introduction by saying Jeffress "hit it out of the park" Before Romney's address in Washington on Saturday, former Reagan administration official Bill Bennett sharply criticized Jeffress. "You did Rick Perry no good, sir, in what you had to say," Bennett told the crowd. He called the pastor's remarks "bigotry" Romney acknowledged Bennett's comments as soon as he took the stage. "Speaking of hitting it out of the park, how about that Bill Bennett!" Romney said "poison- ful the church will make a good neighbor and are excited about the possibilities. ous language has never advanced our cause" and urged social conservatives to pick a presidential nominee who has the best record on the economy. Special Ops and CIA last to leave Afghanistan Church buys South Dakota ghost town FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) - After the Sept. 11 attacks, the CIA and special operations forces were the first to go into Afghanistan, helping to drive the Taliban from power. Now, as America marks the 10th anniversary of the conflict, it appears they will be the last to leave. The two groups are preparing for up to another decade of fighting there even as the bulk of U.S. forces plans for a withdrawal in 2014. U.S. officials say the force left behind will again be largely devoted to counterterrorism. They will also train Afghans. Intelligence and military officials envision the most likely scenario as a network of CIA officials feeding intelligence to special operations forces. Those forces would hunt al-Qaida in areas Afghan forces are unable to control. SCENIC, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota ghost town's future is shrouded in new mystery. A Philippines-based church recently bought the town of Scenic for less than $800,000. The Iglesia ni Cristo church bought the town and surrounding acreage just west of the badlands from a longtime resident and area rodeo legend who had gathered the land bit by bit over several decades. The church isn't divulging its plans for the property. A person answering the phone at its offices in Daly City, Calif., said he couldn't share any information. So far, there has been no church activity in Scenic to hint at what's to come. The lack of information surrounding the sale has some neighbors uneasy.
