Show Friday, August 28, 2009 ^ r 1 HE SIGNPOST continued from front In May of 2009, 16 Weber State students and two professors traveled to Guatemala to work with Mayan women, teaching them the basics of finances, loans, and small business. The women were then given "micro loans" to start their own small businesses. Tonight, these students will share presentations on the subjects of microcredit, indigenous and women's rights in Guatemala, as well as other cultural issues, in tendem with a photographic essay created during the trip. Michel Randriambololonas' name, a saident from Madagascar. A few of the students asked to be called by American names like Frederick, Amy and Rachel instead of their Chinese names. One student, Wang Xin Yan, even said, "Call me anything you want." The interplay of foreign cultures and languages is likely to become a more common element in WSU classrooms. WSU has had a written agreement with SNU for the last decade, but this is the first semester the agreement has brought SNU students to WSU. Clifford Nowell, Associate Dean of the Goddard School of Business said he expects that another 20-30 students will enroll at WSU from Shanghai next fall. In October, Nowell will be traveling with Lewis Gale, Dean of the Goddard School of Business, to Shanghai and South Korea to recruit more international students. "Most universities have a much higher percent of international students," Nowell said. "By bringing in international students we're exposing our students to other cultures and really trying to do what happens naturally at lots of other universities in the country." Gale is also working to develop a study abroad program to allow WSU students to attend Shanghai Normal University for a semester. To make it affordable, Gale is working to secure internship opportunities for WSU students with businesses in Shanghai. As the flavor of WSU becomes more international, students will gain a better "understanding of working in the global environment," Gale said. "Students will need to continue to develop their abilities in the global market." "He was the democratic republicans loved to hate and in many ways was the democrat democrat's ioved to love." Senator Kennedy authored more than 2,500 bills during his career in the United States Senate, according to a press release on Kennedy's political Web site. Hundreds of those bills have also become Public Law. Kennedy was known for many things including his desire to push for affordable healthcare and an emphasis on HIV/AIDS resources and also championing a fight for civil rights and promoting equality for all. T.R. Reddy, professor of political science, said Kennedy had "clout" and when he spoke, people paid attention. "I cannot think of a single person who has his same stature," Terry said "He was probably the Goliath among his peers." Kennedy had a way of finding a balance between his followers and those who had opposing views, "He kept faith with his followers without making enemies with those who had political differences," Reddy said. Kennedy was a proponent of healthcare reform and judicial matters and even though he disagreed on many matters with Sen. Orrin Hatch, he was actually good friends with the senator and was able to share a dialogue with Hatch to work toward ideas for a resolution of healthcare reform. Even though Kennedy's work was better known to those bom before the '80s or '90s he is still known by young politically minded students for his example. Chris Bentley, a senior pursuing a minor in public administration, said the passing of Sen. Kennedy is a "loss to the country." Due to a recent battle with brain cancer, Kennedy was not able to speak in the same manner he did in the past, but Bentley said he remembers the actions more than his words. "I think I will be able to use his example and look at the model he set," Bentley said "Being civil with opposition, that is something that I have always admired and respected of him." Dealing with many different parties and issues, Bentley said Kennedy was able to focus on what was best for the country. "He was able to move past trying to get reelected and focus on the real process of governing and get things done, rather than just trying to please his constituents," Bentley said. "With the world being the way it is right now/' Bentley said, "if everyone would look at Ted Kennedy's example of civility and friendship, even when you disagree strongly with other people's views, the world would be a much better place." The new program will piggyback on preexisting energy-saving appliance rebate programs which exist in over 25 states, but have largely failed due to lack of demand Even appliance stores like Home Depot and Lowe's offer discounts on energy-efficient appliance with little impact With the implantation of government programs like Cash for Clunkers and Cash for Appliances, the new Obama administration has shown a tendency to move V towards purchase-based incentive programs rather then tax cut programs like the ones used under President Bush and the previous administration. The new programs offer direct spending and immediate stimulation while tax cuts give individuals the choice between saving their money or spending it. It is unknown whether the new programs will offer continued consumer buying or just brief pick-meups to the markets, but a clear strategy has been implanted by the new administration. Beautifully comprised compositions scratch the itch that was presented four years ago, but it almost seems as though there could've been more to sink yourself into. However, as its title suggests, Heap has definitely proven she's capable of coming full circle. Comment on this story at wsusignpost.com. |
