"I think they're ready," Crompton said. "The difference between some of those earlier games and the game today was we didn't give up any easy goals. There were stretches in this game where they played really well and as long as we finish our chances, we'll do fine." Gover and the Wildcats head on a roadtrip to Arizona State University for two games Friday and Saturday. the Wildcats added to their lead again, as Osterheldt scored his second of the game on a backhand that slipped under the pad of the Wolverine goaltender. Again, the Wolverines came right back to match the 'Cats as Zeph Ferguson scored for UVU to make it 3-2 before the end of the period. Osterheldt's two-goal performance was key for the 'Cats as they tried and find some secondary scoring behind WSU's top line of Lorenzon, Ian Soldano and Dane Ludolph. "We've got to just find the right ingredients and get the right people together and just go from there," Osterheldt said. Soto must have said something to fire up his team in the third period as the Wildcats pulled away with three straight goals, two from Chris Roberts and another from Lorenzon - Lorenzon has six goals in the Wildcats' past three games. Roberts and Osterheldt, who played on a line together for most of the game, showed some chemistry, combining for twothirds of the Wildcat offense Saturday night. "We've been playing together pretty well in practice," Osterheldt said, "and then, moving lines around, we finally got together and we just put it up on the Scoreboard." Utah Valley scored on a threeon-one with less than a minute left in regulation to close the scoring, 6-3, in what was a closer game than was expected. "We need to realize we're a better team," said Soto, who wasn't thrilled with his team's effort, "and we need to play like it." Soto went on to say his team really didn't show up until the third period and needs to put forth full-game efforts to be successful this season. One thing the Wildcats have been improving on lately is their, defensive-zone coverage. Soto said he liked what he saw defensively from his team Saturday, but there still needs to be more improvement. "We need to stay patient," Soto said. "We need to stay disciplined. We're still running around and guys are getting caught out of position, but it looked good. Against a weaker team tonight, we were able to do some things we probably wouldn't have done against other teams." Another major positive the Wildcats took from Saturday's game was their ability to stay disciplined and out of the penalty box. The Wildcats only took three penalties against the Wolverines, compared to the five or six they picked up in each game last weekend and the 10-15 penalties they racked up each game against Utah State to open the season. "Guys knew we had a short bench," Soto said, "and we were stressing to stay out of the box." Two of the Wildcats' penalties came as coincidental minors which didn't result in powerplays for UVU. The other Wildcat penalty resulted in a UVU powerplay, leading to Rownan's goal in the second period. While the Wolverines were one-for-one on the powerplay, the Wildcats were one-for-six. The 'Cats will try to improve their powerplay and get ready for a tough test as they head down" to ASU for games Friday and Saturday night, looking to keep their winning streak alive. "We're pretty excited to go down to Arizona State, play against a DI team and keep it going," Osterheldt said. Comment on this story at wsusignpost. com. The Wildcats started their conference play slowly last season too, going 3-3 through their first six matches. If the Wildcats can win this weekend's matchups, they'll have the same record. Getting wins this weekend is also crucial to build some momentum in preparation for five straight road matches. "You don't want to go out on the road 1 -5," Givens said. You want people to bring the best they have and you want to be able to step up and meet that challenge." The Wildcats had their best season since 1988 last year, going 11-5 in conference play.
