College campuses and dorm rooms are breeding grounds for flu-like illnesses.Flu shots are now available to students, and faculty members at the Student Health Center of Weber State University. "Flu shots are probably the best protection against influenza like illnesses, by far the best treatment," said Shawn D. McQuilkin, M.D. of WSU Student Health Center. "The vaccine prevents illnesses up to 90 percent of young, healthy adults. It is less effective in seniors whose immune systems have weakened with age." Flu shots were available at the Student Health Center on Nov. 8, 9, 12, and 13, for."high risk" category students. According to McQuilkin, high risk category includes those who have any type of long term or chronic health condition such as heart disease, lung disease, asthma, kidney disease, metabolic disease such as diabetes, anemia, and other blood disorders and weakened immune system(HIV, cancer, steroid treatment- long term). "Without a flu shot you can feel pretty miserable. It's generally a self-limited illness which means it will go away on its own in about five to ten days,"said McQuilkin. "Flu sufferers experience high fevers, terrible sore throats, aches and pains, feel like you have been run . over by a truck." Almost everyone will benefit from a flu shot. But some people have a greater need, and should make a special effort to get this protection each year. Only a small shipment of flu vaccine has tTeffi'n received. The Student Health Center had only received-200 actual immunizations, and is expecting to receive another 200 immunizations.Flu season is most common around December, January and February in the United States. The immune system takes time to respond to the vaccine, so the optimal time to get a flu shot is usu ally from October throughmid-November. 'The flu shot is good for the whole season, you would expect about five or ten days for the vaccine to take affect,"said McQuilkin. Today, flu shots will be available from 9a.m. to 3p.m. for all other WSU students who wish to receive a flu shot to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza. It will be first come first serve while supplies last. Flu shots are free to WSU students, and it is $15 for faculty members."You can almost expect within two or three days the supplies will be gone,"said McQuilkin. Some people do experience soreness or redness at the injection site,-and a slight fever or minor muscle aches. Individuals allergic to eggs should not have a flu shot because the vaccine's viruses are grown in eggs. "There is a very low risk of taking a flu shot, side effects are rare, but you might experience a little bit of a sore arm," McQuilkin said. The BIS degree is good preparation for those planning to pursue. additional formal education. It has proven to be a good way to design pre-professional programs such as pre-med, pre-law, architecture and health administrationeducation. The BIS program can be useful for students wanting a master's degree. Students who create a degree with strong emphasis in math, English and logic skills make strong candidates for an MBA, Elsley said. In society people don't always stay in one profession; they often have radical job changes, Elsley said. "The strength of the degree is that it provides a variety of skills that will be useful in a lot of different professions," Elsley said. A BIS degree could allow students to market their degree to a larger number of employers. "A lot of people concentrate on one area, and that's all they know. BIS is a more well-rounded and marketable degree. Students gain more knowledge in various areas rather than a lot knowledge in one area," Elsley "said. Students wanting to obtain a BIS must complete the general education requirements and a minimum of 120 credit hours with 40 credit hours of upper division work.
